David Houseknecht Obituary

David S. Houseknecht

July 24, 1955 - May 26, 2025

Loving father, devoted husband and beloved family member passed away quietly, surrounded by the love of family at home in Linwood, N.J., in the evening hours of Memorial Day, Monday, May 26, 2025. Born to John and Sally Houseknecht on July 24, 1955, in Muncy, Penn., Dave graduated from Montoursville Area High School in 1973. He matriculated to main campus Penn State University in 1975, best 5-6 years of his life, and remained a life-long Nittany Lions fan. Dave took a summer job at the Irish Pub and Inn in Atlantic City, N.J., in 1981 and remained employed there as a bartender for 43 years. He loved his job deeply and his coworkers and owners were a second family to both him and his wife Silviya, who he met at The Pub in the summer of 1999. Quick with a joke, often risqué, and witty one-liners, he was loved by his customers, many of whom became friends for life. His greatest joy in life were his children, Sarah and David, who will miss him dearly. A fine steak, dry martini and on occasion, a good cigar were his favorites. Penn State football, a game of golf and travel, were his much loved pastimes. The island of Aruba was and remains the Houseknecht family happy place.

Predeceased by his parents John and Sarah (Sally) Houseknecht, David leaves behind his wife of 22 years, Silviya; children, Sarah and David; siblings, John (Carol), Debra (Roland), Patrick and Stephen; numerous nephews and nieces who he loved dearly; and extended family.

Friends and family are invited to attend his visitation on Sunday, June 1, 2025, from 1 to 3 p.m., followed by a 3 p.m. service at the George H. Wimberg Funeral Home, 1707 New Road, Linwood NJ 08221. We invite you to share stories, laughs, and smiles in Dave's memory following the visitation at The Irish Pub, 164 St. James Place, Atlantic City, N.J. Interment will be private. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations can be made to Fox Chase Cancer Center, which helped him time and time again over the past few years to rein in the aggressive cancer that took him away from us, while maintaining a good quality of life. Heartfelt thanks to NJ Health Hospice and Palliative care, especially Terri, Karen and Joselyn, for their compassionate care in the last weeks of Dave's life. Condolences may be extended to the family at https://www.ghwimberg.com.

Sorry For Your Loss My & Condolences to the family

Very sad news. I spent a lot of time with Dave many moons ago. We worked and socialized together. Golf, skiing, trips to Penn State football, jogs, biking (with well-planned beverage stops) or just a beer and chat on balmy summer days in Margate or on a freezing AC winter night. My first day in the Irish Pub I was sitting at the bar by the captain's table (Dave's spot). It was Dave's day off. He sat down, introduced himself. He said he was going out and that I should join him. A few beers, a burger, great conversation, many laughs and the mandatory visit to a casino ensued. Dave was a well read, knowledgeable man, enjoyed a good conversation and had a sharp sense of humor. He was a generous soul. I always caught up with him on visits back to the Pub when he was still tending bar. He was always the same. Charismatic, funny, and genuine. I have very fond memories. RIP Dave. Sincere Condolences to the family.
