David J. Hundrieser ObituaryOur father, David Jules Hundrieser, passed away on October 2, 2023 at his home in Chicago, where he and his wife, Dana (nee Parker), raised two children, David James and Dana Weslee ("DW"). Chicago has always been David's home; our family home is only a block away from where our father grew up. He dedicated more than twenty-five years of his life to the City as a Chicago Police Officer, during which time he earned multiple awards and commendations for his accomplishments. He retired in 2013. David's deep roots in the City did not stop him from adventuring throughout the United States and around the world. We will always cherish the memories of our dad casting a fishing line out into a small, woodland lake, driving the big International tractor with a bucket full of kids, and riding the go-kart near sunset, asking if we wanted to ride to the tops of the hills. He marveled at the Grand Canyon, Yosemite, and the Red Woods, he climbed to the crown of the Statue of Liberty, parasailed in the Gulf of Mexico, snorkeled in Hawaii, and more. He dove off boulders into the Mediterranean. He read more books than anyone could count, journaled nearly every day, and perfected impressions that could make anyone laugh. David made friends that lasted a lifetime and we know he will be greeted by some of his favorite people in Heaven. He will be missed dearly and held close to our hearts during his son's wedding this year and his daughter's college graduation in Spring. Our father taught us how to slow down to notice and enjoy the small things that can often be taken for granted like always making time for a morning cup of coffee, the changing Fall leaves (that he called 'Fruit Loops' up in the UP), dancing in the kitchen during an impromptu baking session, sitting down to an after-dinner card game with friends and family, and turning moments into poetry just for the heck of it. Though the end of our father's life held him facing difficult battles, he is undoubtedly up in Heaven with those he missed, reading a great book, making sure the lawn is mowed, the go kart filled with gas, something incredible is cooking, Motown is playing, and the fishing poles and card games are ready for when we all come home at last.
David is survived by his two children, David James and Dana Weslee (aka "DW" and/or "Pee-Pop"), his wife, Dana Ellen (nee Parker), his brothers, John, Michael (Michelle nee Jacobs), Paul (Christa nee Wyman), his sister Mary Anne (Larry) Barlow, his many nieces and nephews, and his adored pup, Ruby.
The memorial service and celebration of David's life will be held on October 29th, 2023, from 10:00 am to 12:00 pm, with a service by the Chicago Police Chaplain at 11:00 am, at Tohle Funeral Home, 4325 W. Lawrence Ave in Chicago.
Our family asks that in lieu of flowers, please make a donation in our father's honor to the Chicago Police Chaplains Ministry (chicagopcm.org), Saint Jude Police League (saintjudepolice.org), or Haymarket Center (hcenter.org).
