David Lawrence Hunt was born on September 18, 1964, in Saginaw, Michigan, to Gladys Neal and Dwight Smith. On Wednesday, July 2, 2025, he passed away peacefully at home, leaving behind a legacy of love, purpose, and passion at the remarkable age of 60.
David attended Saginaw Public Schools and had a dynamic career, working in various industries throughout his life. Despite facing health challenges, he remained resilient and continued to live life with intention and enthusiasm.
As a devout Christian, David's regular worship at Old Town Christian Outreach nurtured his compassionate spirit. His selfless nature and generosity inspired those around him, fostering a ripple effect of kindness. With a passion for music, David's love for Prince's iconic song 'Purple Rain' symbolized his zest for life, celebrating the transformative power of art.
David's presence had a profound impact on those who knew him, and he cherished his relationships with family and friends. His life's journey is beautifully encapsulated in the scripture verse, "I have fought a good fight, I have finished my course, I have kept the faith:" -2 Timothy 4:7 KJV. Through life's challenges, David remained steadfast in his faith, always wearing his signature smile.
He is survived by his loving children who were his pride and joy, sons, David Knapp, Breeontay Hunt, Antonio Torrez and daughter, Shawneequea Sampson; step-father, Leander Lewis; his loving fiancé, Nieves Hernandez; grandson, Jaylin Hogg; great-grandchildren, Jaylin Hogg, Jr. and Alofa Hogg; sister, Tamikka (Tremayne Champion) Lewis; a host of nieces and nephews including a special bond with Shania Lewis and R'ion Champion, whom he gave the nickname, Ladybug; aunts, Yvette Smith and Phyllis Lowe; uncles, John Hunt, Reginald Smith and Lydell (Judy) Smith; the mother of his sons and former wife, Stacy Knapp; a host of cousins and friends that was dear to his heart that are too numerous to name.
David was preceded in death by his mother, Gladys Neal (whom transitioned December 13, 2024); grandparents, Booker T. and Alfreda Hunt, and Edna Smith; sister, Ebony Vickers; and several other relatives.
The family extends heartfelt gratitude to the Hernandez Family, medical professionals who provided exceptional care, Pastor Benjamin Smith, Ivan E. Phillips, and the staff of Paradise Funeral Chapel for their unwavering support and compassion.
