David Jahraus passed away surrounded by family on January 24, 2026 in
Amarillo, TX. He was 69. A private graveside service will take place at Riverside Cemetery in
Pierre, SD.
David Curtis Jahraus was born to Nancy Baker (Bowing) and Robert Curtis Jahraus on March 25, 1956 at St. Mary's Hospital in Pierre. He was the third of seven children.
Dave attended Lincoln Elementary, Pierre Jr. High, and graduated from T.H. Riggs Sr. High in 1974. He received his bachelor's degree in Business Administration from the University of South Dakota in 1978. Following his college graduation, he moved to
Omaha, NE where he was an assistant manager at Woolco. It was there that he met his future wife Virginia (Gini) Padgett.
Dave and Gini were married May 24, 1980 in Omaha. They were the proud parents of two sons, Andrew and Dan. The whole family loved animals, and they provided a home for several rescue pets.
Dave went on to earn his degree in accounting from UNO and worked for the Quebecorp and later Omaha Steel Casting Co.
Following their retirement and due to health reasons, Dave, Gini and Andrew moved to
Hooker, OK in December of 2024 to be closer to Dan and his family. Gini passed away in January of 2025, and Dave moved to a care center in
Amarillo, TX.
From childhood on, Dave was an avid reader. He was an excellent swimmer and could easily hold his breath long enough to swim the length of the Elk's pool, to the envy of his brothers and sisters. He had the most infectious laugh, and once he started, you couldn't help but join in.
Dave enjoyed card and board games, and he was an accomplished "Hearts" player. He and his dad would have lively political discussions about what they read in Newsweek, Time and US News and World Report.
A hard worker, Dave was employed at the Corral drive-in during high school and at Pierre City Hall during summer breaks from college.
Grateful for having shared in his life are his sons Andrew and Dan, daughter-law Angela, and grandson Grant; brothers, Peter (Susan) Jahraus and Mike (Jill) Jahraus; sisters, Susan (Bob) Stoeser, Molly Jahraus, and Katy (Dwight) Lyren; nieces and nephews, Chad (Cassie) Stoeser, along with their children Riley, Mason, and Delaney; Clara (Walter) Kinzie, Piper
