David Leonard Kenney, 65, of
Eliot, Maine, passed away peacefully on January 26. Born on November 21, 1961, at the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard, David was the beloved son of Robert James Kenney and Patricia Ann (Kenney) Trefethen.
A lifelong resident of Eliot, David graduated from Marshwood High School, where his curiosity and sense of adventure were already evident. During high school, he spent a semester as an exchange student in Edinburgh, Scotland, and later participated in the Dirigo State Program for civic leadership at Colby College-experiences that reflected his openness to the world and his deep care for others.
David was a devoted New England sports fan, passionately cheering on the Red Sox, Celtics, and Patriots, and he especially enjoyed attending UNH Women's Hockey games. He found joy in simple pleasures: taking scooter rides along York Beach, collecting beach stones, and gathering meaningful mementos. A collector at heart, David placed great sentimental value on even the smallest things that brought him happiness.
Although he never had children of his own, David loved children deeply and cherished the time he spent with his extended family. To those who knew him best, David was far more than a son, a brother, a husband-he was a protector, a confidant, a steady presence, and a constant source of laughter. If David considered you a friend, you knew it. His compassionate soul, generous spirit, and unwavering support left a lasting impression on everyone he encountered.
David had an extraordinary way of showing up for others. Whether you were a lifelong friend or a complete stranger having a difficult day, David was always there to listen or lend a hand. On one occasion, he quietly helped a woman who was struggling to pay for her groceries, giving her the money she needed and asking only that she tell no one. If anyone asked, she was his niece, and he was "Uncle Dave." He never spoke of this kindness himself, and surely there are many other good deeds he carried out quietly and without recognition. That was David-always helping, never seeking the spotlight.
David is survived by his loving wife, Tara (Raitt) Kenney; his mother, Patricia (Kenney) Trefethen; his siblings, Linda (Kenney) Drost and her husband, Chip, and Glenn Kenney and his wife Keri; his nephew, Matthew Kenney and his wife Rebecca; his grand-nephew, Lucas Kenney; as well as many cousins and dear friends. He was predeceased by his father, Robert Kenney; his stepfather, James Trefethen; and his nephew, Cory Drost.
A son, a brother, a husband, an uncle, and a friend, David will be deeply missed and forever remembered by all who were fortunate enough to know and love him.
