David W. LaCoss, age 72, passed away unexpectedly on Wednesday, March 25, 2026, at NC Baptist Hospital, surrounded by his loving family.
David was born in
Clifton Springs, New York, to William "Bill" Everett LaCoss and Lillian McGrath LaCoss Ryan. He grew up in the village of Phelps, where he knew everyone and everyone knew him. Some of his fondest memories were riding his horse and spending time with his beloved dog, "Nicky."
After graduating, David rode his motorcycle from New York to Key West, Florida, before eventually settling in Asheboro alongside many of his New York buddies. It was there that mutual friends introduced him to the love of his life, Shelly, on a blind date. This June, they would have celebrated 47 years together.
David is survived by his devoted wife, Shelly Groce LaCoss; his son, Garrett LaCoss of Leland, NC; and his daughter, McKenzie LaCoss Mincher (Jonathan) of Wilmington. He is also survived by his sister, Christine Vienna (Tom) of Florida, and his cherished grandchildren, Bella and Asa LaCoss, and Eulie and Ozlo Mincher, all of whom affectionately called him "Pop Pop," and Bella's mother, Cabell Bryan.
He is further survived by his brother-in-law, Jay Groce (Sarah); nephews Christopher and Will Groce, Brian Simonds, Jesse and Julian LaVancher; and niece Elizabeth Groce Lindberg (Eric).
David was preceded in death by his father, Bill LaCoss; his stepmother, Claire; his mother, Lillian Ryan; his stepfather, Dave; and his sister, Debbie LaVancher.
David began his career building bridges before later working for Reitzel Smith at City Loan and Appliance. He went on to retire from Randolph Electric Membership Corporation after 30 years of service as a Right of Way Agent. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, reading, woodworking, and spending many hours with his loyal companion, "Buddy."
David will be deeply missed by all who knew him, especially those who shared in his humor and the many hunting and fishing trips he loved.
A celebration of David's life will be held at Midstate Cremation & Funeral Service, 304 Lanier Avenue in Asheboro, on Thursday, April 2 at 3:00 PM. Family and friends are invited to gather afterward at Four Saints Brewery for a toast in his honor, just as he would have done for any of his friends.
In keeping with his wishes, some of his ashes will be spread at Pond Mountain and Sunset Beach, two places he loved and spent much of his time.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Three Rivers Land Trust dedicated to David W. LaCoss.
