David Jay Laney
Athens - David Jay Laney, 77, of Athens, formerly of Catlettsburg, Kentucky, died Sunday, March 29, 2026 at his residence.
Born January 27, 1949, in Kenova, WV, he was the son of the late William and Clora Davis Laney. David graduated from Thomas R, Brown High School in 1967, attended the University of Kentucky and retired from AK Steel in Ashland after a long career there. He enjoyed hiking, biking, Anna Maria Island, sunsets, thunderstorms, bluegrass music and was an avid UK basketball fan. He was a member and former Sunday School Superintendent at Burnaugh Baptist Church.
David is survived by his wife, Sheila Mullins Laney; two children, Jacob Laney of Ashland Kentucky and Jessica (Landis) Frier of Buford, Georgia; two stepchildren, Katherine (Carl) Forney of Athens, Ohio and Geoffrey (Bryn) Kleimeyer of Grandview Heights, Ohio; seven grandchildren; one sister, Linda (Leo) Zornes and sister-in-law, Phyllis Laney both of Catlettsburg, Kentucky.
Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by two brothers, Daniel Laney and Billy Gene Laney.
Graveside services will be held at 2:00 PM on Friday, April 3, 2026 at the Golden Oaks Cemetery in Catlettsburg, Kentucky with Pastor Pete Miller officiating. Friends are invited to sign the online guestbook at ehwfh.com. Arrangements have been entrusted with the Hughes Funeral Home in Athens, Ohio.
