David Morrison Lonie, 74, of Manassas, VA, died suddenly, but peacefully, while visiting family in Michigan.
David was born April 14, 1949, to Don and Betty Lonie in Detroit, MI. He graduated from Southfield High School and Taylor University, Upland, IN, with a BA in History. He had an encyclopedic mind and could talk intelligently on just about any subject. He loved art, music, history, sports, books, and traveling. David was a lifelong learner.
He held various jobs before landing in Washington D.C where he worked with Congress on Capitol Hill. He served for three years as a foreign policy analyst for the House Republican Study Committee. For 12 years, he was a senior committee aide for Congressman Gerald Solomon, first on the Foreign Affairs Committee and then on the Rules Committee. In these positions, he was responsible for advising Members of Congress on all aspects of US foreign policy. He also became known for his expertise in the politics of the Middle East, Africa and Asia, as well as matters pertaining to US trade policy and participation in international organizations. Along with his service on Capitol Hill, he served on the staff of the US Mission to the United Nations, has studied at St. George's College in Jerusalem, assisted in the launching of a privately funded rural development project in Ethiopia, and participated in a USAID-funded democracy-building project in Romania.
David is survived by his sister Beth Bradshaw (Steve), brother Gordon Lonie (Laurie), and sister Betsy Martin (Tim). He also had 5 nieces whom he adored: Jenny, Abby, Ellen, Anne, and Jessica.
David loved his Lord and Savior Jesus Christ and is now enjoying being in His presence. His life reflected his faith through his impeccable character, kindness, integrity, humility, honesty, generosity, and love. He lived a full and satisfying life and was truly content in whatever state he was.
He was laid to rest in a private graveside service and will be honored by his colleagues in Washington D.C. at a later date.
Memorial gifts may be sent to The American Bible Society or The Salvation Army.

David was my best friend! He was also a member of our family! He loved my kids and they loved him! They called him uncle David! We shared sports, history, art, culture, and movies! David was a man of integrity who was able to have an intelligent conversation about anything without pride or judgement. David was a great human being! He will be greatly missed!
