DAVID MICHAEL LYONS, Sr., 90 of Leesburg, Virginia passed away on Saturday, June 7, 2025 surrounded by his loving family.
Born Friday, February 8, 1935, in Queens, New York, to the late Timothy and Mary Lyons, Dave was the youngest of their five children. However, Dave was proud to say he grew up in Manhattan, often referring to his childhood growing up on the corner of "33rd and 3rd". He also met his wife, MaryAnn, in the Lower East Side, shortly before he left to serve his country in the United States Navy. Serving on the USS Bennington aircraft carrier, he spent over two years at sea before finishing his last assignment in the service at the Post Office in Adak, Alaska. Given their four years apart, Dave's "priority mail" was all from MaryAnn, and the two were wed in St. Stephens Church on September 12, 1959.
As their family grew, Dave traded in the city for Long Island and began making his daily commute to NYC to work at the New York Life Insurance Company, where he worked for 45 years. He liked to joke that once again, he was back in the mailroom, but, after earning his Bachelor's degree from St. John's University, he left the mailroom and never looked back. The last 20 years of Dave's career saw him in a position that allowed him to travel the United States and parts of Europe, often with his wife and family by his side.
Family was always first with Dave, whether it came to vacations offering new experiences or stops at three different places to get everyone's favorite bakery treats on a Sunday morning. Those who knew Dave from his basement bar at 560 Middle Street knew he was the man in charge, and that the night always ended with "one for the road" accompanied by a Jimmy Roselli song. No matter the time of year, the holiday, or the day of the week, he enjoyed having family and friends in his North Babylon home and was known as an incredible host.
Dave retired in 1997 and would often give thanks to "Mother NYLIC" for all of the travel he and MaryAnn were able to continue during retirement. In 2001, they decided it was time to leave North Babylon and move to Virginia to be closer to their daughters and grandchildren. Dave and MaryAnn bought their place in Lansdowne Woods (formerly Leisure World) and enjoyed retirement in a new home with many dear friends. Dave was a big fan of the movies and sat through many, many children's movies at the theater with his grandchildren. However, he truly loved spending a long afternoon catching a "double feature" at the theater - taking his candy bag and sneaking into a second showing without paying! When asked what he'd do if he got caught, he would always say "I'll just tell them I'm old and confused."
Dave was blessed with good health and remained active with his wife and family well into his 80's. He loved to sit and read the paper from cover to cover with an ever-full coffee cup and, thanks to his life-long sweet tooth, a donut or two. He spent many afternoons relaxing on his balcony seeing the trees sway while watching people work in the garden below. Most importantly, Dave always thought the day should end with a happy hour cocktail and dinner with his wife.
Strong in his faith, Dave was a devoted supporter of the Catholic Church, at Sts Cyril & Methodius in Deer Park NY, and St. Theresa in Ashburn VA. Knowing that he was fortunate enough to have had a wonderful life, Dave knew the importance of helping others and supported charities that helped animals, children and those impacted by 9/11. He lived his life by his own rules and set a wonderful example of a loving, caring, devoted husband, father, and grandfather for his family to follow.
He is survived by his loving family, including his wife of 65 years MaryAnn Lyons, his sons David Lyons Jr. (Jackie), Stephen Lyons (Susan) daughters Loretta Jacoby (William) and Stephanie Tarrant (Ed), his grandchildren Davis, Blake, Meghan, Emily, James, Daniel, Gabby (Mike) and his great-grandchild Keegan, along with many other family and friends.
The family will receive friends from 3:00 PM to 7:00 PM on Thursday, July 10, 2025, at Loudoun Funeral Chapel, 158 Catoctin Circle, SE, Leesburg, Virginia.
A Funeral service will be at 10:30 AM on Friday, July 11th at St. Theresa Catholic Church located at 21371 St. Theresa Lane Ashburn, Virginia 20147.
