David McAfee Obituary

Obituary published on Legacy.com by Hurley Funeral Home - Mason City on Dec. 29, 2025.
David Garland McAfee, 86, of Mason City, Illinois, passed away peacefully on December 27, 2025. Born on September 4, 1939, in Virginia, Illinois to Thelma and Garland McAfee, David lived a full life rooted in family, community, and a deep love for sports and the outdoors.

On September 11, 1960, David married Janice Kay Hardesty in Mason City. Together they shared a remarkable 65-year marriage filled with love. Their bond was a cornerstone of their family life.

David began his career with Mason City Township before joining Texaco, Inc., where he worked for 16 years. His most enduring professional legacy was built over more than four decades at Green Oil Co. in Mason City.

David is lovingly remembered by his three children: Sandy (Rob) Chase of Bonita Springs, Florida; Jill (Bill) Riegel of Mason City, Illinois; and Mike (Rachael) McAfee of Bloomington, Indiana. He was a proud grandfather to five granddaughters: Hannah (Alana) Simpson of St. Louis, Missouri; Zoe McAfee of Pasadena, California; Tessa McAfee of Bloomington, Indiana; Hannah Crouch of Indianapolis, Indiana; and Victoria Crouch of Bloomington, Indiana. His joy extended to the next generation with the arrival of his great-grandson, Stetson Simpson of St. Louis.

He is also survived by two sisters, Mary Anne McAfee and Kim McAfee, both of Springfield, Illinois. David was preceded in death by his parents and his sister Barbara Brown of Canton, Illinois.

A lifelong sports enthusiast, David was an avid baseball fan, particularly his beloved St. Louis Cardinals. He loyally followed the Mason City Huskies basketball team and cheered for the Fighting Illini, Bradley basketball, and the Chicago Bears.

Beyond sports, David found joy in simple pleasures: feeding birds in his backyard, casting a line while fishing, sharing a cup of coffee with friends, piecing together jigsaw puzzles, and tending to his garden. For nearly four decades he cherished visits to Florida to spend time with his daughter Sandy - trips that became treasured traditions filled with sunshine and family.

A memorial service will be held for David on Wednesday, December 31, 2025 at 11:00am at Hurley Funeral Home in Mason City, IL. An hour visitation will begin at 10:00am. Brian Shawgo will officiate the service. Memorial donations in David's name can be made to Reimagine Mason City Foundation.
