David McCray Obituary

Obituary published on Legacy.com by Memorial Park Funeral Home & Crematory - St. Petersburg on Apr. 4, 2025.
David William McCray, 91, entered into the presence of his Lord and Savior on April 1, 2025, in Morgantown, Pennsylvania. Born on November 9, 1933, in San Bernardino, California, David was the son of Esther Mae Watters and William Albert McCray.
A man of deep and abiding faith, David lived his life grounded in the hope and truth of Christ. His quiet strength and servant-hearted spirit were evident in every role he held-as a husband, father, teacher, and friend.
A proud veteran, David served his country with honor in the United States Air Force from 1952 to 1956 during the Korean War. Stationed in Alaska and Iceland, he worked as a Morse Code Operator, a role that reflected his sharp mind and steady focus.
In 1956, he married the love of his life, Barbara Janis McCray, in Washington, D.C. Together they shared 64 beautiful years of marriage, raising three children and building a life filled with faith, family, and adventure. After a brief time in California, they settled in St. Petersburg, Florida, where they raised their family and made lifelong memories. David and Jan loved to travel, especially on summer camping trips with their children, and later served in ministry with his wife helping the Maasai people in Kenya-a cause dear to Jan's heart, and one David faithfully supported.
A lifelong educator, David taught History and Government at the middle school, high school, and college levels before becoming a college registrar later in his career. He was known for his passion for learning, his thoughtful instruction, and his ability to connect with students.
David was an avid athlete, known for his love of basketball during his high school and military years. Later in life, he discovered a passion for tennis. He was also a dedicated collector, with a special fondness for baseball cards and coins.
David is preceded in death by his parents, Esther and William; his sister, Joanne Stedwell; and his beloved wife, Jan. Today, we rejoice that he is reunited with her in the presence of the Lord.
He is survived by his sister Margaret Stedwell; his brother Lynn McCray; his children: Jana Melissa Hibbins (Dennis), Shannon Rae Bernard (Bruce), and Andrew David McCray (Melanie); and seven grandchildren: Tyson Lucas, Emma Warrington, Amber McCray, Daniel Bernard, Emily Bernard, Anna Sloyer (Shadoe), and Lydia Warrington. He is also survived by an adopted grandson, Sebastian Pierce.
David will be laid to rest beside Jan in St. Petersburg, Florida on April 11, 2025. He will be remembered for his quiet strength, his lifelong curiosity, and his steadfast devotion to family and faith. He will be dearly missed and joyfully remembered.

It was a pleasure taking care of David and getting to know him as a person and his family. He had a strong faith, was always kind, and was always more concerned with others than himself. I'm glad to know he is home again. I did everything I could to make him comfortable. Rest peacefully my friend. Your nurse, Katlin.

What a joy to know that David is home. He had a wonderful journey and blessed many along the way. It was a pleasure hearing about his faith journey. He prayed for me every visit. I am grateful for the opportunity to know David and his family.
