David Edward Mettert

David Edward Mettert, 84, passed away early Thursday morning February 27, 2025 at Reid Health in Richmond, Indiana.

A son of the late Earl Newton and Kathryn (Waltz) Mettert, David was born at home in Mooreland, Indiana on October 18, 1940. A graduate of Mooreland High School, David enlisted in the United States Marine Corps on February 17, 1958 and was honorably discharged on January 26, 1961. As a Marine he was a Jet Engine Mechanic serving on board the USS Ticonderoga and the USS Oriskany. He also had duty stations in Hawaii and Okinawa. David was a member of the Holy Trinity Lutheran Church in New Castle and was married there to the love of his life, the former Doris Jean Hedrick, on June 30, 1962. He was an outdoor and firearms enthusiast who enjoyed hunting, fishing and shooting sports. From 1973-2010 David enjoyed taking annual fishing trips to Canada with his family and friends. He held a private pilots license and liked to skydive. David has lived in New Lisbon since 1964 and became active in the community by his memberships in the New Lisbon Lions Club serving as Secretary, a thirty-year member of the Volunteer Fire Department, Scout Master of the Boy Scout Troop. His other memberships include Lifetime Member with Patriot status of the National Rifle Association, N.R.A. Certified Instructor, Fayette County Rifle and Pistol Club- (oldest and longest member), Amateur Radio Club- General Class License. David worked as a machinist and retired from BorgWarner in Muncie after thirty-one years of service.

David is survived by his wife of 62 years, Doris Jean Mettert; daughter, Debbie (Lloyd) Stinson of Nashville; 2 grandchildren, Dustin Stinson of Nashville and Casey (Joshua Sandlin) Stinson of Seymour; 2 great grandchildren, Jace and Quinton Sandlin; nieces and nephews; special friends including Bradley Crone, Curtis Poore and Cecil Cooper; his feline companion, Morris;. He was preceded in death by his sister, Marilyn Orlando.

Visitation will be from 11 a.m. until the time of funeral services at 1 p.m. on Thursday March 6, 2025 at Marshall & Erlewein Funeral Home, Dublin. Deacon Jody Winter will officiate. Burial with military honors will follow at the New Lisbon Cemetery.
