Father, Friend, Brother, Son, Uncle, and Mentor, David Todd Meyer, 58, passed away on December 28, 2024.
David (Dave) was born on December 28,1967 in Ontario, OR to Dick Meyer and Margaret Sigurdson and was the first born of three children. Dave was born late and was a large size baby; those who knew Dave would say this carried through his life; a big personality and always late!
David attended elementary school in Fruitland, ID and when the family moved to Ontario in 1976, he attended Cairo Elementary School. It was during his elementary years where he met life-time friends Tony Franklin and Dave and Doug Looney along with Jay Wettstein. David's love of the slopes began early on when we began riding the ski bus to Brundage Mountain in 1977. The ski buddies he had early on continued to be the same friends he skied with until his last day.
During his middle school years, David developed a love and passion for deer and bird hunting where he and his brother, Stephen would go out after school and hunt until dark. In fact, David's first job was setting trap at the gun club in Ontario.
Dave got involved with body building during high school with long-time friends Rhett Tipton and Brian Osborn at Tony's gym and even competed! During high school, David could be found in Mccall snowmobiling and skiing. When he wasn't skiing, David helped out at the family ranch working on fence, moving cows, and branding.
Following high school, David attended TVCC where he worked at Sizzler. It was his manager at Sizzler that was instrumental in leading Dave to Christ. Following TVCC, Dave transferred to Pacific University in Forest Grove where he double majored in Biology and Psychology.
While in college, he volunteered at the womens rape crisis center; it was then he decided to pursue a career in law enforcement. He was first a reserve police officer before gaining a position in 1991 with the Portland Police Bureau as a patrol officer. In July 2000, he was promoted to Sergeant and was instrumental in changing how the hostage negotiation team operated. He was pivotal in coordinating with SWAT and was often a bridge builder between organizations and taught mind set for criminal behavior.
In December of 2010, David was promoted to Lieutenant and was the first probationary Lieutenant to be selected to lead the Tactical Operations Division that included the airplane unit, Explosives Ordnance Disposal Unit, and SERT. To say that David was respected by his fellow officers is an understatement. As a leader, he modeled hard work and never asked his team to do something he didn't do alongside them. He was always committed to the mission of what it meant to be in law enforcement: to serve and protect.
David met Tamara in August 1992 when David asked her on a date, Dave style over the phone when Tamara had called the police precinct with a question. Dave andTamara had their first daughter, Amanda in 1993 and their second daughter Alyssa in 1999. Together, Tamara and David loved going to rodeos, mountain biking, skiing and found a new love for paddleboarding. As a family they enjoyed traveling and attending Mariners baseball games. David spent a lot of time with his daughters as adults; as an avid concert goer, his girls cherished going to concerts with their dad. Both Alyssa and Amanda would say everything they love to do as adults came as a result of their dad.
Dave always knew he wanted to come back to the area where he grew up so he could be closer to his brother. So in June 2018, following Dave's retirement, he and Tamara packed up and moved to Idaho where they could enjoy their love of the outdoors.
Dave had a tight network of family and close friends he considered family. David was always ready for a good time and truly lived life to the fullest. It was serendipitous that he would spend his last day on the ski hill doing what he loved with those he loved.
David will lovingly be remembered by his wife of 29 years,Tamara Meyer; two daughters, Amanda Meyer and Alyssa Meyer; his brother Stephen (Raeshelle) and sister Christine (Russell) Seay; step brother John (Linda) Sigurdson, and step sisters, Marie (Jim Svoboda) and Yvette (Chris) Land; mother, Margaret Sigurdson and many nieces and nephews. David was preceded in death by his father, Dick Meyer and step father, Dr. John Sigurdson.
