David Benton Mitchell, Sr. Sr.

David Benton Mitchell, Sr., 79, of Goldsboro, NC, went to be with his Lord and Savior on Monday, July 28, 2025.

He is survived by his loving wife of 60 years, Kay Evans Mitchell; his sons, David (wife, Amy) and Brian; and his grandchildren, Hunter, Abby, and Brayden. He is also survived by his cherished granddog, Muffin Mitchell.

Benton was born on October 22, 1945, to Levi Edgar and Esther Beasley Mitchell. He was preceded in death by his parents; his sisters, Pauline Faircloth and Yvonne Evans; and his brothers, L.E. Mitchell and Leon "Doodle" Mitchell. He is survived by his sisters, Joyce "Tootsie" Cooke and Carole Mitchell, as well as many nieces and nephews.

A lifelong farmer in Wayne County, Benton came from a proud lineage of farmers. Before the age of 16, he picked corn for a neighbor, and with his very first paycheck, he bought his mother a beautiful set of dishes. During his senior year of high school in 1964, he planted his first tobacco crop, and from then on, it was clear that Benton's calling was to be a farmer.

As the days turned into years and the years into decades, Benton's love of farming was passed down to his sons, who have carried on the family tradition. For nearly 58 years, they farmed alongside their father. Anytime there was a decision to be made, the question was often asked: "Have you talked to your dad?"

It would be fitting to call Benton a good steward of the land-but even more fitting to call him a legend. While he was known as an exceptional farmer, he was even more admired for his brilliance, patience, and gentleness. When he didn't have the answer, he would research and formulate until he found one. In times of hardship, whether in the field or in life, Benton met challenges with calm and steady resolve. His wisdom, humility, and quiet strength brought comfort to those around him.

One of his grandchildren recently said it best: "Benton was not just a wonderful farmer-he was nothing short of a loving father, grandpa, cousin, neighbor, and friend. He tended land the way he built love for his family. His wisdom and softness shine in his boys."

In his retirement years especially, Benton was a source of trusted advice, expert guidance, and heartfelt comfort. His home radiated peace-a reflection of the love and grace that built it.

The family would like to extend their sincere thanks to Benton's medical care teams: the Duke University Hospital liver team, UNC Health Johnston (2nd floor and ICU), and the staff of Kitty Askins Hospice Center. Their exceptional care, knowledge, and compassion extended Benton's life beyond all expectations, and for that, the family is deeply grateful.

The family will receive friends on Thursday, July 31, 2025, from 6:00 to 7:00 p.m. at Rosewood First Baptist Church. A service to celebrate Benton's life will follow at 7:00 p.m. in the chapel, with Rev. Tim Lipp and Rev. Vernon Braswell officiating. Interment will take place at 10:00 a.m. on Friday, August 1, 2025, at Evergreen Memorial Cemetery in Goldsboro.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to Rosewood First Baptist Church, where Benton was a faithful member, and/or to Kitty Askins Hospice Center.
