Ironwood, MI – David John Nezworski (Nezi), age 75, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, Oct. 15, 2025, in his hometown of Ironwood, Michigan, with his loving family at his side after a very brief battle with cancer.
David graduated from Luther L. Wright High School in 1968. Shortly after, he proudly served in the Army National Guard for 6½ years.
Born and raised in Ironwood, David lived a life defined by integrity, dedication, and an unwavering commitment to others. A hardworking man with humble beginnings, David began his career as a helper on a bread truck as a kid. From there, he took on numerous roles throughout his life: working at the Colonial Skateland, Swift Meat Packing, as a delivery driver for Pepsi and Bunny Bread, and later as a proud owner-operator for Taystee and Barrel O' Fun. He co-owned and managed the A&W restaurant with his wife, where his leadership and people skills left a lasting impression.
In 1967, at the Colonial Skateland, David met the love of his life - Marilyn - the best thing that ever happened to him. Their story began on the ice rink and blossomed into a marriage full of love, laughter, and unwavering partnership. They were married on Aug. 19, 1972, and together they raised three amazing children: Andy, Tootsie, and Laurie. David was endlessly proud of his children and their accomplishments, always their biggest supporter.
David later served the Ironwood Area Schools as a bus driver, custodian, and eventually head of maintenance, where he was admired for his reliability and tireless work ethic, which he passed on to his family. He also drove logging truck for Niemi and Basom Trucking as a second job to provide the "extra toys" that made life more fun. Anyone that knew Dave, knew he loved his toys. Even after his retirement, he stayed busy helping at Rigoni's Bakery as a handyman.
David's legacy extends far beyond his professional life. He was an avid sports fan, with a deep love for the Green Bay Packers and the Detroit Red Wings. One of his main passions was hockey. He was not only a player and fan, but a respected youth hockey coach for many years. Under his guidance, local teams celebrated multiple wins and earned trips to state tournaments. More than just a coach, he was a mentor - instilling discipline, teamwork, and confidence in generations of young athletes.
David was also a faithful stock car racing fan, proudly cheering on his favorite driver - his son, Andy. He followed his racing career, whether in person or streaming online, rooting for the #7 car with unmatched pride. Saturday nights often found him at the ABC Raceway, sitting in the stands with his racing buddy, Tom.
In his later years, David loved nothing more than spending time with his grandchildren - whether watching their sports, following their school events, or FaceTiming just to hear about their day. He cherished camping trips, sitting around the fire telling stories, and listening to the golden oldies, especially his favorite - Elvis Presley.
Known for his quiet strength, humble wisdom, and a heart always open to others, David was more than a father - he was a guide, protector, and constant source of love. He offered his time freely, gave advice, whether requested or not, and lived by a code of honesty and service. His legacy is etched in the lives he touched, the smiles he inspired, and the steady presence he brought to every challenge. He was always a phone call away.
He will be deeply missed by his family, friends, former players, coworkers, employees, and all who had the honor of knowing him.
David is survived by his beloved wife of 53 years, Marilyn, and their children: Andy (Sheryl) Nezworski, Tootsie (Josh) Rice and Laurie (Shaun) Munn. He was a proud grandfather to: Garet, Kiah, Reese, Lilli, Teigan, Holden, Ellory, Ina Jo and Taggart.
Also surviving are his siblings: John (Marleen), Larry (Sandy), Jerry (Suzanne), Mike (Jill) and Mary Ann; along with numerous nieces and nephews; and close friends and neighbors, including the Rigoni Family, all of whom he loved dearly.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Elaine and Frank Nezworski; his brother, Frances, and his wife, Lori; his brother-in-law, Don; a nephew, Jeremy; and his father-in-law and mother-in-law, Doug and Jean.
Visitation and funeral will be held on Saturday, Oct. 18, at Salem Lutheran Church in Ironwood, Michigan. 9:30-11 a.m. Visitation; 11 a.m. Funeral; Lunch to follow in the church basement.
