David John Novak

David J. Novak of Tafton, Pennsylvania, passed away peacefully at home on December 18th, 2025, surrounded by his family. He is survived by his wife of 56 years Kathleen; his daughters Jennifer (Robbie) Mulberger of Blooming Grove, PA and Carolyn (Michael) Donnelly of Lawrenceville NJ; his grandkids Riley, Ava, and Connor; and his mother-in-law Rita Herman. He also leaves behind his dog Nellie. Dave was predeceased by his baby brother Michael, his mother Catherine who left him too soon when he was in high school, and his father Martin.

To those who knew him, David Novak was the quiet strength behind his family. He led his family with his presence and grace. Whether cheering on his loved ones at games, watching performances, or being at important milestones, he was always there listening, supporting, and believing in them. Family meant everything to him, and he would say they were his proudest accomplishment in life.

Born on February 2, 1947, to Martin and Catherine Novak, Dave grew up in Bethlehem, Pennsylvania. He attended Saint Simon and Jude until 8th grade and then moved on to Allentown Central Catholic High School. During his high school years, he met the love of his life Kathleen (Kit) when his parents purchased a home on Lake Wallenpaupack. Dave and Kit's love story became the foundation of his family, and the lake became the place where cherished memories were made. His happiest moments were spent on the lake sailing, kayaking, fishing, and taking his kids and grandkids tubing and waterskiing. Many summer nights were spent together with family, sitting on the porch with a cocktail, talking, and playing cards or board games. It is those small moments that meant the most to him and his family.

Dave was a humble man who never wanted to be in the spotlight, but his accomplishments in this world left a lasting impact. He served his country and fought in the Vietnam War as a telephone operator. Those years were his toughest as he had just married Kit before his draft notice came. In Vietnam, he was awarded the Bronze Star. Upon his return from war and with a degree in Economics from Allentown College, he went to work at the Department of Labor for almost 40 years. He worked his way up to become a Senior Policy Analyst with the New Jersey Employment and Training Commission, a Commission he helped establish. There he helped create programs to guide high school students and the unemployed entering the workforce.

Dave was a devoted family man, and as his health deteriorated it was his strong will and love for his family that allowed him to keep going. His absence leaves a void in the lives of those who loved him most. He will be truly missed by his family, who will forever remember his love, kindness, support, and the moments spent together.

In his final days Dave said, "The lake is heaven on Earth" and that will be his final resting place. As per his wishes, there will be no services, just a small intimate family gathering at the lake.

In lieu of flowers or cards, to honor Dave, have a drink (his choice would be 3 fingers of scotch) and spend time with your family, because to Dad, time spent together was the most important part of life.
