David Overton Obituary

Obituary published on Legacy.com by Iles Dunn’s Funeral Home on May 5, 2022.
David Overton, 69, of Des Moines, Iowa passed away peacefully on May 2, 2022, after a very short battle with cancer. He was a beloved Husband, Father, Grandpa, Brother, Uncle, and Friend. Dave was born April 17, 1953, to Melvin and Ruby (Green) Overton and grew up in Carlisle, Iowa. He proudly served in the United States Army during the Vietnam War and was a proud member and supporter of the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post #738 in Des Moines. Throughout his life, he was a die-hard fan of the Minnesota Vikings and Iowa Hawkeyes. He enjoyed fishing, hunting, and wrestling. He spent the last 20 years bringing hope, laughter, and joy to many children and the elderly by being the most huggable Santa Claus at Christmas time. While he considered himself a very simple man, he was so much more to his kids and grandkids that loved him dearly. His greatest joy in life was spending time with them and attending their many sporting and dance events.
Dave is survived by his best friend and wife of 40 years, Lori; his 4 children Jon (Tami), Wendy Crane (James), Danny (Mel), and Chad (Lisa); his grandchildren: Kaitlynn & Nathan Overton, Abby & Ellie Crane, Tyler & Brittany Overton, and Aiden & Elena Overton; his siblings: Bruce (Pip), Mike, Pat (LaDonna), Larry (Jeanne), Cheryl Herd (Wayne), and Gary; along with numerous nieces and nephews.
He is proceeded in eternal life by his parents (Melvin and Ruby) and 2 brothers, Tim and Terry.
Dave had a strong, Christian faith that gave him perfect peace. He lived his life with one of his favorite scriptures ingrained in his heart and mind, Isaiah 26:3, "Thou will keep him in perfect peace whose mind is stayed on thee because he trusteth in thee."
The family would like to thank the nurses at Veterans Hospital and VA Hospice for their care and compassion during his stay, and Chaplain Stuart Juarez for his friendship and guidance to Dave and the entire family for many years.
Visitation will be held from 4-6 pm, Tuesday, May 10th, 2022 at Iles Dunn's Chapel. A Funeral Service is planned for at 10:30 am on Wednesday, May 11th, 2022 at Amazing Grace Church located at 1903 53rd St in Des Moines. Procession to the Iowa Veterans Cemetery, near Van Meter, for Military Honors Ceremony and Burial will follow the service.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be made to Lori Overton to offset Dave's medical and funeral expenses.
