DAVID PENDERGAST Obituary

PENDERGAST, David L. Age 75, of Boston and Mattapoisett, Massachusett, and Naples, Florida, passed away peacefully, on Friday, December 12, 2025, surrounded by family. He was the beloved husband of Mary (Bevelock) Pendergast. Born in Boston, David was the son of the late William and Betty (McCarthy) Pendergast and was raised in Dedham and Weston, Massachusetts. He was a graduate of Ohio Wesleyan University, received a PhD from Fordham University, and later earned a Master of Public Administration from the Harvard Kennedy School. David devoted his career to public service, particularly in the field of mental health. His work included leadership roles at the Erich Lindemann Mental Health Center, Medfield State Hospital, and Harvard Community Health Plan. Following his service as an expert witness in a Federal class action lawsuit, he was appointed by the U.S. Federal Court as Commissioner of Mental Health for the U.S. Virgin Islands. Known for his quick wit, curiosity, and warmth, David connected easily with others and valued conversation, humor, and friendship. A lifelong athlete and fitness enthusiast, he played rugby, cycled extensively, began boxing in his 60s, and vigorously competed in tennis. A devoted New England sports fan, he passionately followed the Red Sox, Patriots, Celtics, and other New England teams. Above all, David cherished his family and friends. He was fiercely loyal to all of them, deeply devoted to Mary, and especially beloved by his nieces and nephews. In addition to his wife, Mary; he is survived by his siblings, Peter Pendergast, Beth Pendergast (Walter Arsenault), Julie Pendergast (George Vega) and Cindy Pendergast, wife of his late brother, William Pendergast; as well as many nieces, nephews, great-nieces and nephews, in-laws, and cousins. He was predeceased by his first wife, Linda Pendergast; and his brother, William Pendergast. His Funeral Mass will be celebrated Friday, December 19, 2025, at 12:00 noon, at St. Anthony's Church, followed by Burial in St. Anthony's Cemetery. I had first opened J. Harrington's a hair salon on Newbury Street. A the time David was CHristine's [whom I work beside] boyfriend. All I can remember is how much I laughed, how quick his mind saw the world. So intelligent so much fun to be with, such a great loss for all who knew him. John Clark Back Bay Boston.
