Dr. David Pfoff memories and recollections
I finished my Oculoplastics fellowship in 1980 and moved back to Denver after having done my residency there from 1976 to 1979. I spent the initial six years in Midtown Denver as that seem to be where the ophthalmology sub specialists were located. By 1985 there was a movement happening at Porter´s hospital. The leader of this movement was Dr. David Pfoff. There was a new ophthalmology center called Center for Sight. Dr. Pfoff was instrumental in getting the Kissinger´s to donate money to Porter´s hospital for an eye center. Dr. Pfoff made it clear through invitations, conversations, and meetings that Denver ophthalmology would now be centered at Porter´s hospital at the Center for Sight.
Heeding the invite, multiple docs moved south near Porter´s, including Drs. Ken Hovland, Bruce Wilson, and myself. We were joined by many others, including Drs. Bill Whelan, Bob Shields, Neil Baronberg, Tom Larkin, Steve Podgorski, Richard Kelmenson, Bill Hines, Rick Beatty, Laura Cannavo, Tim Ammons, Jim Patterson, Gary Jamell, Jim Maxwell, Doug Pechette, Robert Pegg, Bob Heiss, Randy Craven, Alan Margolis, George Moo-Young, Ross Brechner, Karen Repine, Herb Simons, Steve Petty, Jack Zilis and others I have failed to mention for lack of recall.
Dave was a huge supporter of subspecialists. In my own practice, he was known as "chairman of the board." He referred hundreds if not thousands of patients for oculoplastic issues to me over a period of 30+ years.
Dave was a leader in intraocular lens implantation. Going back to the early 1980s, placing an artificial lens inside the eye after cataract surgery was very controversial. Dave was
"all in" on this surgery and became a leader both in Denver and nationally in intraocular lens implantation surgery. Patients came from all over Colorado and beyond to seek his care.
Dave was also instrumental in training the residents at the University of Colorado ophthalmology program. Hundreds of ophthalmology residents benefited from his influence. He was an inspiring and enormous influence in the Colorado ophthalmology community for more than 40 years, as well as servicing Goodland, Kansas for decades.
Thank you, Dave, for all you have done. You were an innovator, educator, influencer, and leader who inspired a generation of eye surgeons and subspecialists. We will miss you.
