David Alan Powell
September 28, 1956 – May 17, 2025
With profound love and gratitude, we celebrate the life of David Alan Powell, who passed away in his sleep on May 17, 2025, at the age of 68. David's life was defined by compassion, resilience, and an unwavering devotion to those he held dear.
A lifelong resident of Oak Cliff, Dallas, David was born and raised in the community he cherished. He graduated from Skyline High School in 1975 and continued to find joy in the familiar streets, enduring friendships, and simple beauty of his neighborhood.
David was preceded in death by his father, Henry Lee Powell; his mother, Virginia Love Powell Rennaker; his stepfather, Guy Phil Rennaker; and Blythe Bulkin Powell, beloved wife of his nephew Christopher.
In the past year, David faced significant health challenges requiring extended hospital and nursing care. His deepest wish was to return to his home and his cat, Jack, whom he had rescued two years earlier. We are grateful that this wish was fulfilled. The family extends heartfelt thanks to Dr. Richard Dickerman and the compassionate team at Select Care Hospital in DeSoto for the care they provided.
David's gentle spirit and curiosity for the world were evident in his love of history and travel. He shared many adventures with his forever friend Marian, and lovingly ensured that his mother and stepfather experienced the places and moments they dreamed of-especially cherished was their home and property at Lake Fork, a place close to David's heart. He cared for them tenderly until their final days.
David's life was a testament to perseverance. In 1993, he overcame an addiction to alcohol, setting forth on a new path of purpose and service. He returned to school and began a second career as an elementary school teacher with Dallas ISD, where he found great fulfillment, particularly in working with children with special needs. His dedication and kindness touched countless young lives. His niece remembers with great love the time he saved her from a near-drowning as a child-a glimpse into his deeply protective and nurturing nature.
David is survived by his two brothers, James Lee Powell (Stephanie) and Gregory Wayne Powell (Karen); his niece Leigh Powell Hood (Zac); and nephews Daniel Powell (Tiffany), Benjamin Powell (Toby), Christopher Powell, Joseph Powell, and Michael Powell (Carmel). He also leaves behind 11 great-nieces and nephews whom he loved completely.
The Powell family wishes to extend their deepest appreciation to all who have offered support and comfort during this time of loss. David's memory will live on in the hearts of all who knew and loved him.
