David Sain Obituary

David was born in Fountain Head, Tennessee on February 11, 1939 to Harold and Dorothy Sain. He went to meet his Lord and Savior on September 17, 2025 at the age of 86 in Nashville, Tennessee.

David preached his first sermon at the age of 13 in November of 1952, preached by appointment during high school and college, and began full-time preaching in1960. His 66-year ministry ended with his passing. He had more than 40 years of experience as a speaker on radio programs and more than 30 years as a speaker on television programs. In addition, he taught Bible courses for 11 years at Madison Academy and Mars Hill Bible School. David was also writer for the Spiritual Sword Quarterly for 14 years and spoke at numerous lectureships conducted by churches, universities and preacher training schools.

David was an outstanding athlete in his younger years and, in 1956, he helped lead the Linden, TN high school basketball team to a state championship. In addition, he was a starting pitcher for the Hickson, TN high school baseball team and during his college years was a member of the Freed Hardeman College basketball and tennis teams. His love of sports continued into adulthood as he often coached little league teams and played industrial league softball and was an enthusiastic racquetball player. Until his passing, he was an avid fan of Kentucky Wildcat basketball and UT Vols football and was determined to make each of his grandchildren’s first words, “Go Big Orange!”

While at Freed Hardeman, he met the love of his life, Phyllis Cherry. They were married on October 16, 1960, in her hometown of Henderson, TN. She was continually his greatest encourager and the biggest supporter of his ministry.

He is survived by his loving and devoted wife, Phyllis; daughter, Rhonda Pennington (Kelvin) and son, Aaron (Laurie). He is also survived by five grandchildren Tyler Pennington (Adrienne), Hannah Shong (Nick), Claire Howard (Ben), Adam Sain (April), Taylor Wigginton (Gentry), and 12 great-grandchildren: Georgia, Sawyer, Eliza, and Sutton (Pennington); Brooklyn and Lincoln (Shong); Jimmy and Jack (Chaffin), James and Kate (Howard), and Marlowe and Holland (Wigginton); four siblings: Sarah Richey (Elbert), Paul (LaDon), Mark (Debbie), and Jessie (Debbie).

He is preceded in death by his parents, Harold and Dorothy.
