David Schalk Obituary

Obituary published on Legacy.com by Allen Funeral Home and Crematory on Dec. 20, 2025.
David Schalk - "A Tall Thin Man with Thick Glasses" passed away on Saturday, December 13th 2025.

David Eugene Schalk, age 78, died in Bloomington Indiana at his desk while surfing the World Wide Web. The Late Living Legend, local lawyer / politician, champion of the U.S. constitution, advocate for personal freedoms, unalienable rights, and the pursuit of happiness, Deputy Sheriff, renaissance man, practical giant, environmental hero, chemist, theoretical mathematician, self-taught guitarist and pianist, songwriter, email writer, writer's writer, comedian, and loving father, will be deeply missed. David was born in Beech Grove, Indiana on June 29, 1947. He was married twice, once to the late Jolon DeLeury, and later to Laura Frazier. David is survived by his four loving children, David "Bob" Robert DeLeury-Schalk, Sarabeth Stroller Schalk-DeLeury, Jennifer Marie Schalk, and Alexander Eugene Schalk, each of whom he challenged to think precisely, love furiously, and speak their minds. He impacted the rest of the world the same way. The afterschalk of his presence here will cause countless ripples in its wake.

Considered a great friend, hilarious wild man, and original thinker by many, David is and will be dearly missed and fondly remembered. He said years ago that he wanted his epitaph to read: "It was noted that he was a tall thin man with thick glasses." He was a towering 6 feet 9 inches tall and wore glasses "as thick as a coke bottle." When he was much younger he said wanted to be skeletonized, placed in a chair with a whisky bottle in one hand, and the other hand "flipping the bird," though more recently, he stated that he "no longer gives a $#!^". He often said, "One day, I'm going to sprout wings and head on up." Those closest to him are confident he followed through and is now having a blast at that Great Clown Palace in the Sky.

Funeral services are open to the public and will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Tuesday, December 23rd, 2025 at Salt Creek Cemetery, located directly across from Knight Ridge Cemetery (3775 Knightridge Road) in Bloomington, IN 47401.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests a donation to the Innocence Project (https://innocenceproject.org/donate) or to the Lake Monroe Water Fund (https://www.lakemonroewaterfund.org/give).
