David Sellers Obituary

Obituary published on Legacy.com by Wilcox Funeral Home - Carthage on Mar. 7, 2026.
David Michael Sellers, known as Michael to his friends and "Pop" to his grandkids, went to be with Jesus on Friday, March 6, 2026 at the age of 64. He leaves behind a legacy of love, countless memories, and a family that was his greatest earthly blessing.

Born September 18, 1961, in Meridian, Michael grew up in Quitman, where his childhood was spent camping and playing along the Chickasawhay River. He was a worker from the start, spending his high school years helping out in every corner of the family's furniture and grocery stores before heading off to the University of Southern Mississippi.

After graduating, Michael moved to Carthage to open Ward's restaurant. As it turned out, Carthage was exactly where he was meant to be, because he moved there the very same month as Betty Carol. They met, fell in love, and were married on August 16, 1986, at First Baptist Carthage. They would have celebrated 40 years of marriage this coming August.

Michael was a man who found purpose in keeping his hands busy, and whether he was working on a project or finding something that needed repair, it brought him joy when he was using his time and talents to serve others. He recently shared with his family that God doesn't just want our abilities, but He wants our availabilities. Michael lived that out every day; he was a loving father who was always there for his children, Jenna and Brandon, and someone who was constantly available to lend an ear or share a blessing with those in need.

He also took great joy in feeding others, ensuring that no one ever left with an empty stomach. Michael loved to talk and would gladly talk your ear off-especially if the subject involved his childhood stories, his latest project, or his grandkids. "Pop" made sure each one got a turn to be the captain of the boat at the beach and was always down for an ice cream run (though his family knew he was just as likely to eat a whole tub by himself!).

In his later years, Michael grew immensely in his walk with Jesus. He loved singing in the choir and spent his recent years practicing the guitar at all hours of the day and night-much to Betty Carol's patient amusement. Through daily physical struggles, Michael stayed grounded in prayer. He has spent this time searching for his place of service, driven by a deep desire to minister to others, truly wanting his life to serve as a testimony to the grace of God.

He was preceded in death by his father, Bobby N. Sellers, Sr., and his mother, Louise Cook Sellers.

Michael is survived by his wife, Betty Carol Sellers; his daughter, Jenna Sellers Gaines and her husband Rustin; his son, Brandon Michael Sellers; and his cherished grandchildren, Olivia, Jack, and William Gaines. He also leaves behind Dr. Eddie and Dot Hamilton, who were like a second set of parents to him; his brother, Bobby N. Sellers, Jr. (and wife Kathy); and his sister, Sandra Sellers Lucas (and husband Mike).
