David Smith Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Apr. 16, 2025.
Surfside Beach - David Alan Smith, 80, Surfside Beach, South Carolina, left this earth on April 8, 2025, after having thrived for 25 good years with both congestive heart failure and Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD).

Dave was born on December 1, 1944, in Schenectady, New York, the son of H. David and Dorothy (Smith) Smith. He was a graduate of Christian Brothers Academy in Schenectady and received a B.A. degree in 1966 from Dartmouth College, Hanover, New Hampshire. He continued his studies at Columbia University, New York, New York, receiving a Master's Degree in Business Administration in 1970.

For the majority of his 30+-year career, Dave was a mortgage lender in New York City, most recently at M&T Bank. Dave retired in February 2000 after a near fatal heart attack.

In 1968 Dave married Darilyn Keith, in Scarsdale, New York. Dave and Darilyn welcomed their son, Courtney Russell, in December 1972. Dave and Darilyn's marriage ended in divorce in 1982. In 2000, Dave married Christine (Tina) Renard, originally from Green Bay, in Forest Hills, Queens, NY. Dave and Tina lived in Forest Hills until they bought a house in Surfside Beach in 2005 and moved down to South Carolina to enjoy golf and other outdoor activities at the beach. Besides golf, Dave enjoyed spending summers on the Bay in Green Bay, Wisconsin with Tina's extended family, playing contract bridge, reading, cooking, and-happily for Tina-finding the best bargains at the local supermarkets and wine shops.

A highlight of Dave and Tina's early days together was attending the 1997 Super Bowl at the Superdome in New Orleans and watching raptly as the Green Bay Packers thrashed the New England Patriots 35-21.

Dave was preceded in death by his parents and his stepfather, Samuel Thompson.

Dave is survived by his wife Tina of Surfside Beach, his son Russell, Russ's partner Chia Minaya, and granddaughters Harmony and Bella, of Brooklyn, New York.

Dave is being cremated at Cremation Services Direct, Myrtle Beach, SC. A memorial service and celebration of life will be held at a later date.
