David Smith Obituary

Obituary published on Legacy.com by Michigan Memorial Funeral Home, Inc. on Jan. 12, 2026.
December 31, 1974 – January 9, 2026

David Jonathan Smith, 51, of New Boston, Michigan, passed away on Friday, January 9, 2026.

Born in Dearborn, Michigan, David was the middle child in a close-knit group of five siblings. He was preceded in death by his parents, Lawrence and Jeanette Smith. He is survived by his older brother, Michael Smith; sister, Amy Arnett (Kenneth); and younger twin sisters, Katherine Marcero (Donald) and Rebecca Russell (Eric). He was a beloved uncle to eight nieces and nephews: Hannah, Noah, Matthew, Sarah, Jacob, Abigail, Zachary, and Nathan.

A proud graduate of Michigan State University, David truly bled Green & White; his spirited game-day enthusiasm for the Spartans was legendary. David was a larger-than-life personality-vocal, quick-witted, and endlessly funny. He filled every room with laughter and possessed an enormous heart, often prioritizing the needs of others over his own.

David enjoyed spending time outdoors with family and friends, particularly while hunting, fishing, four-wheeling, and camping. He looked forward to vacations up north, creating memories that his loved ones will carry forever.

He was also deeply committed to animal welfare, volunteering his time at the Wyandotte Animal Shelter. His compassion helped many four-legged friends find homes, and he personally rescued three dogs-Max, Cooper, and Hoss-who brought him immense happiness.

His warmth and generosity touched everyone who knew him. David will be profoundly missed by his siblings, extended family, friends, fellow volunteers, and all who shared in his infectious joy.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donations in David's memory to the Wyandotte Animal Adoption Center (wacshelter.com) or Downriver for Veterans (downriverforveterans.org).

He lived fully, loved deeply, and left an indelible mark on many lives.

We knew David as Tex when he used to visit the Knaup/Ogren cottage at Higgins Lake. We enjoyed his entertaining humor and his trademark of western hat and boots. We were so saddened by his passing and we grieve along with his family members and many friends. May he rest in peace.

My deepest condolences to the Smith family. My childhood has many memories of David. His compassion and commitment to animals allowed me to overlook his dedication to MSU. I´m deeply saddened that I will no longer be able to reach out to him.
