Louis Rochon Obituary

Obituary published on Legacy.com by Young Gilbert Funeral Home and Cremation Services, Inc. - Algonac on Jan. 26, 2026.
Louis Lawrence Rochon, 80, of Algonac, Michigan passed away unexpectedly on Friday, January 23rd, 2026. He was a good kind man who will be greatly missed.

Born and raised in Marine City, Michigan, Louis was the first of five children of Arthur and Dolores Rochon. Growing up, he spent his summers playing at his grandma's farm on Hessen Road and worked as a paper boy, pedaling through the neighborhoods of Marine City. He served as a life guard at the Marine City Beach, and could hold his breath longer than anyone around. He attended Holy Cross School, served as an altar boy, and graduated high school in 1963. He enjoyed bowling in a league with his dad.

Louis went on to Port Huron junior college and received his bachelor's degree from Michigan State University in 1967. He later received his master's degree from Eastern Michigan University. He loved history and math and ultimately taught math for over thirty years at Algonac High School, where he was known for his eclectic tie collection. He inspired countless students over the years, many of whom would come up to him or his family and reminisce about being in Mr. Rochon's class years ago.

Louis met the love of his life Angela Andino Rochon in May 1968, when she caught his eye as he passed by the classroom where she was substitute teaching. He always told the story of how she had an aura of light around her and he knew she was the one. Their first date was on her birthday, October 9, 1968, where they danced until 2 a.m. They were engaged just three months later and married on July 25, 1969, embarking on almost 6 decades of loving marriage.

Louis and Angela had three children and raised their family on Maple Street in Algonac. They enjoyed summer days at Family Swim at the Algonac Lion's Pool and long walks hand in hand through the State Park. He loved his family and especially enjoyed handing out gifts in his Santa hat at the family Christmas party each year.

He retired from teaching in his early 50's and then dabbled with doing taxes because he loved numbers. But most of all he enjoyed retirement with Angela, and becoming Poppa to his six grandchildren, who competed for coveted loaves of "Poppa's bread." He spent hours each Wednesday morning at retired teacher breakfasts, and evenings in his chair with a big bowl of popcorn watching monster movies. You could hear him whistling from rooms away as he played game after game of chess, with classical music playing in the background. He was a regular at the gym, attaining top "workout warrior" status in December 2025.

Louis is survived by his loving wife of 57 years, Angela; his children Jennifer (Josh Goldberg) Rochon, Julie (Mike) Brockley, and Marc (Mindy) Rochon; his siblings Gerard (Charmaine) Rochon, Joseph (Mindy) Rochon, and Joan (Mike) Norman; his six grandchildren Jessica (Nick) DiNapoli, Andino (Allison) Rochon, Anthony Rochon, Paley Goldberg, Louis Goldberg, and Melissa Brockley. He is predeceased by his parents, his sister Sue (Chuck) Konik, and nephew David Konik.

Visitation will be held at Young -Gilbert's Funeral Home 1422 Michigan St. Algonac, MI. on Thursday, January 29, 2026, from 4:00–8:00 p.m. Visitation will continue on Friday, January 30, 2026, from 1:00–8:00 p.m., with a Rosary recited at 4:00 p.m. and Shared Remembrances in celebration of his life at 5:00 p.m. The Funeral Mass will take place on Saturday, January 31, 2026, at St. Catherine's Catholic Church, 1103 Washington Street, Algonac. Instate will begin at 10:30 a.m., followed by the Funeral Mass at 11:00 a.m.

Interment at St. Catherine's Catholic Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made in his name to the Friends of Algonac/Clay Library (one of his and Angela's favorite places) through the Algonac/Clay Library at 2011 St Clair River Dr, Algonac, Michigan 48001; or to the Hunter Hospitality House in Port Huron.
