David L. Speer, age 77, of New Philadelphia, passed away early on Monday, September 29, 2025, in Ohio’s Hospice Truman House.
Born on Wright Patterson Air Force base on March 10, 1948, he was a so of the late Tilman W. and Norma J. (Plotts) Speer. On July 23, 2003 he married Penny Hillman.
David proudly served his country in the US Marine Corps during the Vietnam War. He also served in the National Guard during Operation Desert Storm. He worked in management for ODOT for 34 years before his retirement.
David loved to travel to visit family. He was known as a family man, just enjoying being with his family and doing the things they loved. He and Penny also traveled to Las Vegas to enjoy another passion of his life, casinos. When not working or traveling he enjoyed being outside or reading a good book.
He will be deeply missed by his wife of 22 years, Penny Speer; children, Leslie (Tim) Moreland, Tonya (Scott) Kreitzer, and Tim (Holly) Speer; step-children, Michael (Pamela) Church, Angie (Jon Fahrner) Church, and Patrick (Maria) Church; nine grandchildren; six step-grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; one step-great-grandchild; brothers, Phillip (Doreen) Speer, and Rand Speer; and numerous nieces and nephews.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a brother, Steve Speer.
The family will greet guests on Sunday, October 5, 2025, from 1:00 to 2:00 PM in Linn-Hert-Geib Funeral Home and Crematory at New Philadelphia. A service honoring David’s life will begin at 2:00 PM, in the funeral home. The Carl C. Stoller VFW Post 1445 will render military honors following the service.
