David Eugene Spencer, 82, passed away unexpectedly in his Roaring Branch home on Sunday, December 8th, 2024, with his wife at his side.
Born September 3rd, 1942, in Sayre, PA, to the late Lawrence and Hazel Spencer, David grew up in Columbia Crossroads and attended Troy High School before entering the Army National Guard. He was honorably discharged in August of 1963.
On November 12, 1966, David married the former Betty Moretz in Elmira, NY. Together they shared 58 loving years of marriage and raised one son.
David was employed by Ward Manufacturing in Blossburg and Masonite Corporation in Towanda, followed by Jones and Brague Mining on Barclay Mountain where he made several lifelong friends. Upon closure of the mine in 1982 he opened Spencer's Garage in Roaring Branch, which he proudly ran until his retirement. David also served as mayor of Ogdensburg, and along with his wife and a small committee of friends, took great satisfaction in organizing the Memorial Day parade and celebration in Ogdensburg.
Known affectionately (and occasionally ironically) as "The Reverend", David loved running "the local garage", which became a social hub that turned customers into friends. Being self-employed was hard work but he always did it with honesty and pride. There was never a shortage of BS to go around, and sometimes even a few Coors Lights at the end of the workday. A prankster at heart, he was known by his family and friends for off the wall nicknames and practical jokes followed by a quick smile and a sparkle in his eye.
An automotive enthusiast for life, David enjoyed classic cars, racing, and collecting antique Ford tools, in addition to auctions, going for a cruise around the counties to visit with family and friends, and socializing at the Arnot Sportsman's Club and Hillside Rod and Gun Club.
He leaves behind his loving family; wife, Betty, at home; their son Wade (Sonya) Spencer of Wellsboro; and sisters Phyllis (Cliff) Welch of Covington, and Laurie (Brian) Krise of Canton. He was predeceased by his beloved mother, Hazel (Shedden) Spencer Saunders in 2015.
A visitation will be held for family and friends on Saturday, December 14, 2024, from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. at Pepper Funeral Home and Cremation Facility, 578 Springbrook Dr.,
Canton, PA. A funeral service to honor Dave's life will follow at 1 p.m. with Pastor Will Strunk officiating. He honorably served in the US Army and military honors will be accorded at the funeral home following services. Burial will be held privately at a later date. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations in David's name may be directed to the no-kill animal shelter of your choice.
