David Stauss Obituary

Obituary published on Legacy.com by Legacy Options Funeral and Cremation Services, LLC - Naples on Jan. 9, 2026.
David John Stauss, Jr., 63, passed away on January 3, 2026, after a brief illness in Naples, Florida surrounded by his family. David was a beloved son, brother, uncle, cousin and friend known for his warmth, humor, authenticity and his enduring ability to make people feel cared about in his presence. He leaves a legacy of love as he was so cherished by his extended family and many friends.

David grew up in Falmouth, Maine with his parents, Dave and Judy and his three siblings, Dori, Jim and Tim.

It was during these years that David's capacity to bring laughter, joy and happiness into people's lives began to blossom. He developed lifelong friendships in the Brook Road neighborhood, playing in the school bands and as a member of the high school basketball team, and as a singing waiter at Smith Farm. He went on to study history at St. Anselm's College in Manchester, NH and it was here that his musical talents were on full display. He sang and danced as the lead actor in "Damn Yankees", "How to Succeed in Business Without Trying", and "Bye Bye Birdie". After graduation, David continued his love of musical theatre starring as Harold Hill in "The Music Man" with the Windham Center Stage Theatre. Throughout his life, David appreciated great music and delighted family and friends by playing "Name that Tune" whenever and wherever he could-around the dinner table, at a party, and around the bonfire at the annual family vacation in Kennebunkport, Maine.

David began his career in sales with Duncanson and Holt, and worked the last 40 years as a Senior Account Executive in Health Insurance for UNUM. He was deeply respected and appreciated by his colleagues for his unwavering kindness and his willingness to mentor others.

David had a huge heart and was the consummate son, brother, uncle and friend. He was extraordinary at making people feel special and deeply loved. He is survived by his mother, Judith Shanley, his two brothers, Jim and Tim Stauss; his sister, Dori Stauss Hutchinson and his brother-in-law Kirk Hutchinson, 11 nephews and nieces, 12 cousins and countless friends.

A celebration of David's wonderful life will be held at Holy Martyrs Church, 266 Foreside Road, Falmouth, Maine on January 24, 2026 at 11am. A reception will follow. In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation in Dave's honor to St. Anselm's College, class of '85. https://www.givecampus.com/campaigns/67899/donations/new?a=10916450

I will always remember David as an excellent high school student and athlete. No one enjoyed his high school years more than David. His infectious spirit rubbed off on all those around him. He will be sadly missed by everyone who knew him. A life taken way to early!

Heartfelt sympathy goes out to each of David´s loved ones. While I haven´t seen David since high school, I haven´t forgotten his infectious smile and the sound of his laughter on the basketball court. Rest in peace.

Not sure where to begin. I´m incredibly saddened to realize David is not here with us anymore. He was a great man and many many people will miss him. Including me.

I´m so sorry to learn of your loss. We both need David very well, first as fellow students at St. A´s and then later at Unum. He was always a joy to be around with an infectious laugh and smile we all grew to love.

He will be missed by many including us, his friends, Liz and Peter Rickett (Falmouth, ME).
