David John Tosteson, M.D. entered his final frontier on May 5, 2025 after a brave battle with brain cancer. Many were the voyages of this beloved husband, father, grandfather, brother-in-law, uncle, friend, doctor, and all-around great guy. His 69-year mission:
To explore this strange, beautiful world and beyond
Dave traveled the world, oftentimes to serve his deep love of astronomy. Throughout his life, he taught himself the craft and became a well-respected, nearly-professional amateur astronomer who viewed through his telescope things that people weren't supposed to be able to see. But Dave's travels weren't always physical, as his insatiable curiosity led him to pursue a depth and breadth of interests that were as interesting as he was. From Star Trek to Shakespeare, Beethoven to Chicago, Gopher hockey to African drumming, and rollerblading to golfing, Dave was always engaging, always learning, and always willing to share his knowledge and passion with anyone.
To seek out new ways to bring life to his civilization
For some people, being a doctor who epitomized what a family physician should be might have been enough. Dave, though, always sought other ways to contribute to his community and those around him. He was an energetic Scoutmaster; a devoted and active member of any church he attended; a talented author; and a gracious helper who would come to your aid without a second thought.
To boldly live like no one has lived before
Whether it was his quirky and quick sense of humor or his nearly boundless energy and enthusiasm, Dave was a presence in any room. Even more than that, though, he was someone who shared his love boldly. He loved and cherished his wife, Monica, whom he married less than a year after meeting. He loved and encouraged his kids, Sam and Sonja, of whom he was endlessly proud. He loved and delighted in his grandsons, Miles and Asher, who always couldn't wait to go swimming in the lake with Papa. He was the guy who called you every birthday and anniversary; the guy who teased but was always kind; the guy who always let you know that he cared and that you mattered to him.
While Dave has submitted his final captain's log, his mission and memory is carried on by his wife, his two children, his two grandchildren, his in-laws, nieces and nephews, cousins, "frelatives" (a Dave-ism), and countless friends, colleagues, and patients.
In addition to flowers, memorial gifts to the David J. Tosteson, MD and Monica Tosteson Fund of the St. Croix Valley Foundation can be sent to 1830 Hanley Rd. We will miss you, Dave, more than words can ever express. May your wonderful example help us all to "live long and prosper."
