DAVID GRIFFITH WIRTH JR.
David Griffith Wirth Jr. of Green Valley, Arizona and Golden, Colorado passed away on Dec. 9, 2017 at the age of 80. He is survived by his loving wife of 57 years, Sharon Wirth; sons, Michael (Julie) and Griff (Cindy); daughters Tracy (Tom) and Kristy (Jeff); grandchildren, David, Patrick, Robbie, Kelley, Tommy, Danny, Taylor, Katie, Joe, Sarah, Tyler and Griffy.
David graduated from the University of Illinois with an M.S. in Ceramic Engineering in 1960. After working at Los Alamos National Laboratory, he returned to the University of Illinois where he received his Ph.D. in 1967. He served as vice president of research and development at Coors Porcelain Company in Golden, Colorado. He also taught at the Colorado School of Mines where he established the Colorado Center for Advanced Ceramics.
In retirement, he enjoyed taking his children and grandchildren to Rockies games, mastering the grill, and supporting Sharon's art. David will be remembered for his intellect, humility, sense of humor and warm personality. He touched many lives through coaching and mentoring young people throughout the years. Always willing to lend a hand, he was generous with both his time and talents. He loved sports and enjoyed spending time with his grandchildren and beloved Yorkies, Spike and Sassy.
A celebration of life will be held at a later date.
