Deaconess Hicks was born in San Fernando, Trinidad and Tobago. She was ordained as a Deaconess in 1992 and served as a Chaplain for the Deaconess Ministry at Mount Tabor Missionary Baptist Church. She was a dedicated member of the South Florida Progressive Baptist Association, serving also as a Chaplain.
Deaconess Hicks was deeply involved in ministries, serving in the bereaved ministry, prison ministry, usher board, homeless initiative, and charitable outreach. She spent many years as a foster mother, providing love, stability, and care to therapeutic children in need. Her generosity extended far beyond her household, touching countless lives through holiday gift giving, community service, and quiet acts of kindness that often went unseen but never unfelt.
Deaconess Hicks was also an active member of the NAACP, standing firmly for community, justice, and unity. She was employed as a Bank Teller early in life and later spent over 25 years in airline reservations-a role that perfectly reflected her patience, kindness, and gift for helping people. She approached her work with professionalism and compassion, touching many lives with her calm presence and warm spirit.
After God, family was most important to Deaconess Hicks. She was a loving mother who raised her three children-Winston, Crystal, and Kyrie- "in the way that they should go," grounding them in faith, integrity, and love. She supported them tirelessly, ensuring that each of them received a higher education and every opportunity to thrive. Her children were her greatest joy, and she poured her heart into guiding and nurturing them. Deaconess Hicks also spread love and joy to her grandchildren and great-grandchildren, who love and adore her.
Deaconess Hicks is preceded in death by: her parents, Kyrie and Maud Byer; husband, Deacon Hicks; and siblings, Malcolm, Joycelyn, Judy, and Beverly.
She leaves to celebrate her wonderful memories: her children, Winston Neverson (Chamoun), Crystal Thomas (Handel), and Kyrie Neverson (Nicol); grand-children, Shaniah, Asaria, Kyrie, Samuel, Keenan, Hannah, Matthew, and Amira; great grand-children, Shakur and Kumari; siblings, Linda, Kelvin, Hazel, Maureen, Keith, Ben, and Elma; nieces and nephews; devoted friends, Linda Spivey, Maria Thomas, Belinda Jefferson, Glinda Brundidge, and Cynthia Hunter; and a host of family members, church family, foster children and friends.
Deaconess Hicks' memory will continue to live on through the lives she touched.
