Dean P. Ashbrook, age 88, of Pomeroy, passed away Thursday, December 12, 2024, at Trinity Regional Medical Center in Fort Dodge, Iowa.
Dean Phillip Ashbrook was born October 10, 1936, in Lake City, Iowa. He was the son of Raymond and Sarah (Gidle) Ashbrook. He graduated from Manson High School in 1954. Dean entered the U.S. Army in 1955 where he served until his honorable discharge in 1957. On February 17, 1957, Dean was united in marriage to Ila Jean Holtapp at St. John Lutheran Church in Pomeroy. Dean farmed and worked at a gas station for several years. He then worked as a mechanic for Garber – Birkey Implement in Pomeroy for many years, retiring in the early 1990's. In 2005, Ila Jean passed away and Dean stayed in their home in Pomeroy. In 2006, Dean began driving school bus for Pomeroy Schools, a job he loved and did until retiring in 2022 due to health reasons.
Dean was a member of St. John Lutheran Church and the American Legion. He was a very active member of the Pomeroy community, having served on the City Council, as an EMT and Fire Dept. Chief. He enjoyed woodworking, camping, gardening, cooking and working on cars.
Survivors include his daughters, Tammy Ashbrook of Gilbert, AZ, Bonnie (Roger) Williams of Mallard, Colleen Barrett of Pocahontas, Lisa Clark of Queen Creek, AZ and Sharon (Ken) Ferguson of Ridgefield, WA; 11 grandchildren; four great-grandchildren and a sister, Doris Johnson of Lake City.
Dean was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Ila Jean; sisters, Darlene Golding and Mary Jane Alpers and a brother, Lloyd Ashbrook.
