Howard Dean Edwards, age 89, of Delaware, Ohio, peacefully passed away on Sunday, January 25th, 2026, in hospice care at the Kobacker House in Columbus, Ohio. Dean was born on March 19th, 1936, at his home in
Galena, Ohio, the son of the late Donald D. Edwards and Thelma May (Kellner) Edwards.
On January 10th, 1990, he married Jan Braskett, and together they shared 28 wonderful years of marriage before Jan's passing in 2018.
Dean proudly served the Sunbury community for over 26 years with the Sunbury Police Department. He also worked at General Electric. Dean was a member of the US Army Reserves as a field mechanic.
Over the years, Dean lived in Galena, Sunbury, and Delaware, Ohio, and he spent 25 years in Cody, Wyoming.
Born with a natural connection to horses, he began riding, training and showing western, a passion that shaped the rest of his life.
He and his wife made their home on a ranch in Cody, Wyoming, where he embraced the land, the lifestyle, and the traditions of the West. He became part of the Cody Gunfighters, entertaining visitors with daily Western reenactments and sharing his love of cowboy culture with people from all over the world.
A dedicated student of history, he held a particular fascination for the Civil War. He spent countless hours researching the era and collecting artifacts, especially those related to the US Cavalry. His reverence for history extended beyond study-he proudly participated for many years in the reenactment of the Battle of the Little Bighorn in Hardin, Montana.
Dean was an outdoorsman who enjoyed hunting, fishing, camping, and riding his motorcycle. His love of animals extended to his dogs, in particular his beagles, Yogi and Lord Baltimore.
He is survived by his children Susan (Moises) Garcia - Jeffersonville Ohio, Nancee (Nageeb) Edwards - Lakewood Ohio, Mary (Jay) Thompson - Plain City Ohio, Scott (Marsha) Braskett - Galena Ohio, Lisa (Dan) Gibson - Thornville Ohio; Grand Children Megan Tschakert - Worthington Ohio, Mitchell Davis - Westerville, Ohio, Merrill Davis - Westerville, Ohio, Greg Braskett - Marengo Ohio, David W. Braskett - Marengo Ohio, Robert Braskett - Orlando Florida; Great Grand Children Hannah Molina, Lorena Davis, Collin Braskett, Marissa Braskett, Alaina Braskett, and Harper Braskett, and many nieces and nephews.
In addition to his wife Jan, Dean was preceded in death by his parents Donald D. Edwards and Thelma May (Kellner) Edwards, brothers Robert Edwards and James Edwards, and son, David (Thedy) Braskett.
Visitation will be Tuesday, February 3rd, 2026, from 12:00pm to 1:00pm at Snyder Funeral Homes, DeVore Chaple (637 N State Route 61,
Sunbury, Ohio 43074). The Funeral Ceremony for Dean will then take place beginning at 1:00pm with Pastor Marvin Hintz officiating. Graveside Service & interment will then follow in Sunbury Memorial Park.
