Deborah Powell Obituary

Obituary published on Legacy.com by David Lee Funeral Home & Cremation Services on Nov. 5, 2025.
Dr. Deborah E. Powell, pioneering medical educator and former dean of the University of Minnesota Medical School, remembered for her vision, leadership, and mentorship Dr. Deborah E. Powell passed away October 30th 2025, surrounded by her family. She was 85.
Born in Lynn, Massachusetts, in 1939, Dr. Powell earned her bachelor's degree from Radcliffe College in 1960 and her medical degree from Tufts University School of Medicine in 1965. She completed postgraduate training at the National Cancer Institute, the National Institutes of Health, and Georgetown University, where she discovered her passion for pathology and medical education.
Dr. Powell's academic journey took her from the University of Kentucky, where she became chair of pathology and laboratory medicine, to the University of Kansas, where she served as Executive Dean and Vice Chancellor for Clinical Affairs. In 2002, she was appointed Dean of the University of Minnesota Medical School, the first and only woman to ever hold that position. Her tenure was marked by transformative leadership. She introduced the Flexible MD Program, allowing students to individualize the pace of their medical training, and launched the Education in Pediatrics Across the Continuum (EPAC) initiative, linking medical education directly to residency. Both programs became national models of innovation. After stepping down as dean she continued to teach and work on new models of medical education, and as dean emerita held a professorship in the Department of Laboratory Medicine & Pathology.
Her national service was extensive. Dr. Powell held leadership roles in major organizations that shape medical education and practice, including the Association of American Medical Colleges, the American Board of Pathology, the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education, and national pathology societies. Her work won widespread recognition: she was elected to the National Academy of Medicine, received the AAMC's Abraham Flexner Award for outstanding service to medical education, the McKnight Presidential Leadership Chair at the University of Minnesota, and numerous other honors celebrating leadership, scholarship, and humanism in medicine. Known for her intellect, empathy, and integrity, Dr. Powell inspired generations of students and colleagues who recall her as a demanding yet deeply supportive mentor--a leader who both shattered glass ceilings and built ladders for others to climb.
Outside of her professional life, she loved travel, cooking and knitting. She was preceded in death by her husband Ralph "Tad" Powell and brother Walter H Forbes III. She is survived by her brothers Alan Forbes and David Forbes, and sister Sally Campbell (Alastair); her children Amanda Ragon, Adam Carpenter (Pamela), Joshua Powell (Ruth), and Nathaniel Powell; and her grandchildren Spencer, Luke, Cole, Clay, and Benjamin.
A celebration of Dr. Powell's life will be held at a future date, to be announced by her family.
Dr. Deborah E. Powell will be remembered not only for the barriers she broke but for the generations she empowered.

Our condolences to the family of Dr. Deborah Powell. She was a wonderful mentor, role model, and friend. She left a great legacy as a teacher and educator, a mother and grandmother, and I remember her being a great cook. (I still use her wild rice salad recipe and have passed it on to many of my family and friends.) I worked with Dr. Powell for many years at the University of Kentucky, where she was encouraging to young faculty members. I later was privileged to work with her as a trustee of the American Board of Pathology. Diane Davis Davey and David Wiebe
