Annapolis native Deborah Ann Sumler passed away peacefully on Sunday, October 12, 2025. She was 74 years old.
Deborah was born and raised in Annapolis, where she spent her formative years. She was a proud graduate of Annapolis High School, where she established lifelong friendships and laid the foundation for a life filled with love and laughter. After completing her education, Deborah found her calling at The Capital Gazette, where she dedicated her career to journalism, reflecting her passion for storytelling.
Deborah was a devoted member of the Catholic community, where her faith played an integral role in her life. She was known for her warm heart and her love for family gatherings, where her vibrant personality shone through. She had a playful spirit in her younger years, often playing energetically with family and friends and always enjoying a good time filled with laughter.
In her leisure time, Deborah found joy in listening to classical music and R&B, reflecting her deep appreciation for the arts. She also enjoyed watching television, often sharing her favorite shows with her loved ones. Her enthusiasm for life was infectious, and her ability to find joy in the simple things left a lasting impression on all who knew her.
Deborah was preceded in death by her beloved mother, Mary Evelyn Johnson Sumler, her father, Jonas Sumler, her daughter, Meta Moulden, and her brother, Jeffrey Henderson. She is survived by her dear sisters, Sylvia Hill, Joyce Sumler; her brother, Darrell Parton; and her cherished grandchildren, Akeem Dorsey and Daronja Smith. Her family was her greatest treasure, and she took immense pride in being a loving sister and grandmother.
As we remember Deborah, we celebrate a life filled with love, laughter, and a spirit that could light up any room. She will be deeply missed by her family and friends who were fortunate enough to know her.
