Debra Jean Skovan

Age 74, passed away on Friday, February 13, 2026 at Arnot Ogden Medical Center in Elmira, NY. She was born February 1, 1952, in Elmira, NY, a daughter of the late Harvey McDonnell and Jean (Johnson) McDonnell. Debra served the Flowing Wells Unified School District in Tucson, AZ for her entire career, which included being a teacher and various administrative roles. She had a passion for quilting that extended beyond just making quilts, but also included teaching others how to use specialized and often complicated equipment. She also loved listening to music and playing World of Warcraft. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband of over 40 years, Jeffrey Skovan. She is survived by two sons, Russell Skovan (wife Amanda) of Mooresville, NC, Dean Skovan of Elmira, NY; two brothers, Kevin McDonnell (wife Trish) of Elmira, NY, Harvey McDonnell of Elmira, NY; and one sister, Lisa Jaramillo (husband Nick) of Elmira, NY. In addition, Debra is remembered by many extended family members and friends who will deeply miss her. Family and friends are invited to visit Walter J. Kent Funeral Home, 858 Lake St. at Washington Ave., Elmira on Saturday, February 21, 2026 from 11:00 am to 1:00 pm. Funeral services celebrating Debra's life will follow the visitation at 1 pm. Pastor Jeremy Cranmer will officiate. Debra's cremains will be interred at the Woodlawn Cemetery in Elmira, NY following her service. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made in Debra's memory to Project Linus online at https://www.projectlinus.org/donate.php.
