Robert Ryan Obituary

Obituary published on Legacy.com by Walter J. Kent Funeral Home - Elmira on Feb. 8, 2026.
Robert Francis Ryan, 78, of Elmira Heights, New York, passed away on Saturday, February 7, 2026, at Arnot Ogden Hospital, surrounded by his loved ones, following complications after surgery related to lung cancer.

Born on August 11, 1947, in Elmira, New York, Robert was a lifelong resident of the community he loved so much. Elmira wasn't just where he lived - it was where he built his life, raised his family, and formed lasting friendships. He proudly followed in the footsteps of his father, Francis, known to many as "Taxi Ryan," and spent many years driving taxi himself - work he truly loved.

Robert never met a stranger. He knew everyone, and everyone seemed to know him. Whether behind the wheel or out around town, he always had a story to tell and a joke ready to share.

In addition to driving taxi, Robert was well known for roofing alongside his son and grandsons. He took great pride in working with his hands, and even greater pride in working beside his family. Those days weren't just about getting the job done - they were about laughter, lessons, and memories made together.

Robert enjoyed life's simple pleasures. He loved playing bingo, cheering on his favorite team, the Buffalo Bills, bowling, golfing, and gambling of any kind. If there was a game to be played or a bet to be made, he was all in. He enjoyed the thrill, the camaraderie, and most of all, the fun that came with it.

He had a remarkable sense of humor and a natural kindness that drew people to him. He was always ready with a joke, a story, or a listening ear. His warmth and wit will be deeply missed by all who knew him.

He is survived by his loving wife, Annette Ryan; his children, Clarice Ryan, Randy Ryan (Jeanette Ryan), and Cindy Ryan (Randy Banks); his cherished grandchildren, Kyle, Devin, Cali, Kira, and Randy, Jr.; and his beloved German Shepherd, Scout.

He was preceded in death by his father, Francis; his mother, Nancy; and his sister, Gloria Dildine.

Robert's legacy lives on in the stories he shared, the laughter he sparked, and the love he gave so freely. He will be remembered for his humor, his hardworking spirit, and the many lives he touched throughout the Elmira community.
