Della Elvira Heath Wetta was born March 7, 1941 in Crockett, Texas and went to be with the Lord May 25, 2025.
Born in Crockett, Texas to Warren and Nellie Heath, she was a happy child, attending public schools. At eighteen, she joined The Order of the Eastern Stars and remained a member for her entire life. During her high school years, she met the love of her life, a traveling oil surveyor named Billy Wetta. They dated for four years, and when she graduated from Crockett High School in 1959, he kept seeing her, even when she moved to the big city of Houston to stay with her brother while she worked in a bank. Eventually, Billy asked for her hand in marriage, and she said yes. They were married on April 8, 1961, in Crockett. They moved to San Antonio to start a new life and a new family.
Settling down in San Antonio proper, Della worked for a couple of years as a school crossing guard while Billy worked for the post office as a letter carrier. Their first daughter, Zandra, appeared in 1963, with their son, Eric, following shortly behind in 1964. Their second daughter, Heather, arrived later, in 1974. All these children required a career change, and Della spent her days as a very happy stay-at-home mom in her small house on Corona in Alamo Heights. She was heavily involved in her children's lives, acting as Boy Scout Den Mother for Eric and as Brownie and Girl Scout leader for Zandra and Heather. When her last child was starting to show her independence, Della started working again as a Cafeteria monitor at Alamo Heights High School, a place that allowed her to keep an eye on her youngest as she navigated her high school career. When Heather wanted to play basketball in High School, there wasn't a Girl's team, so Della decided to make one. Thanks to her efforts, Alamo Heights restarted its High School Girls' Basketball team as an offered class, and thanks to this initiative, she moved up quickly in the ranks, eventually taking on the role as ISS administrator. While working, she started taking classes at St. Phillips Community college, seeking an associates degree, but a cancer diagnosis in 1999 prevented her from achieving this goal. During and after her successful bout with cancer, she continued working at Alamo Heights High School, remaining there until she retired in 2008.
After retirement, Della spent most of her time at home with her beloved husband, reading voraciously, working on puzzles, and enjoying being where she felt like she belonged. Besides, her newly-assigned duty as a grandmother to four boys took up a lot of her time! Every chance she could, she would go to College Station with Billy and Eric to visit, with Fourth of July, Thanksgiving, and Christmas acting as the usual holidays. While she was visiting, she playfully teased her Grandchildren and watched them grow into fine young men.
She is preceded in death by her parents, Warren and Nellie Heath, her husband Billy Wetta, daughter Zandra Wetta, and sister-in-law Cathy Heath. She is survived by her children, Eric Wetta of San Antonio and Heather Segrest (Nathan Segrest) of College Station, TX, grandchildren Xander, Benjamin, Louis, and George Segrest of College Station, TX, her brother Gene Heath of Conroe, TX, her sister Nellie Casburn of Katy, TX, brother-in-law Curtis Casburn, and several nieces, nephews, and cousins.
Visitation will be held on Tuesday, June 3rd, 2025 from 4:00.PM. to 8:00 P.M. at Mission Park Funeral Chapels Cherry Ridge. The Funeral Service will be held Wednesday, June 4th, 2025 at 12:00 P.M. at the Mission Burial Park North Dominion Chambers chapel with a committal service to follow.
