Delmar Lavern Hampl, 95, of Russell, Kansas, and formerly of Luray, Kansas, passed away peacefully at his home on Wednesday, September 3, 2025.

Delmar was born September 12, 1929 on the family farm near Luray. He was one of two children born to Philip J. and Matilda K. (Bachman) Hampl. He attended school in Luray and graduated from Luray High School. He then attended Kansas State University where he earned a degree in Mechanical Engineering and a commission in the U.S. Air Force in May 1951.

Delmar served nine years in the USAF Reserve. Two of those years he was on Active Duty as a Project Engineer at the Wright Air Development Center near Dayton, Ohio.

Delmar was united in marriage to Mary Lou Harper on May 18, 1955, at the Presbyterian Church in Butler, Missouri. This union was blessed with two children; Julie and Kevin. As a family, they made their home in Russell.

Delmar was a lifelong grain farmer in the Luray area. For many years he also practiced engineering with a consulting firm and in private practice. He was a licensed engineer, land surveyor and inventor on several U.S. patents. He was proud to be the fourth-generation steward of a Century Farm which has been in the family since 1908 and is now nurtured by his son Kevin.

Delmar’s surviving family include his wife of 70 years, Mary Lou of the home; daughter, Julie Davis (Roger) of Santa Barbara, California; son, Kevin Hampl (Sarah) of Platte City, Missouri; and two granddaughters, Elisabeth Hampl and Hannah Hampl.

Delmar was preceded in death by his parents and sister Clara Brewer.

A private family graveside service and burial will take place in Luray City Cemetery at a later date. No visitation will be held. A Memorial has been established with Amherst Church. Contributions and condolences may be sent to Pohlman-Varner-Peeler Mortuary, who is in charge of these arrangements.
