Delore "Del" A. Schraufnagel, age 94, of Hartford, Wisconsin, passed away peacefully at home on Tuesday, July 8, 2025, with his devoted caregiver and dear family friend, Beth Gorman at his side.
Born on November 11, 1930, in Hartford to Edwin and Alice (née Testolin) Schraufnagel. On May 24, 1952, he married the love of his life, Mary Schwartz, at St. Kilian Catholic Church in Hartford.
In 1948, Del proudly served his country in the United States Navy. Upon returning home, he worked at Western Lime, a quarry in Nasbro, with his grandpa for one and ½ years. He worked various jobs in the 1950's before he dedicated himself to serving his community, joining the Hartford Police Department on February 1, 1959. On July 1st, 1970, Del was promoted from patrolman to detective, making him the first official police detective in the Hartford Police Department. He later went on to graduate from the 100th session at the National FBI academy in Quantico Virginia. Over the next 33 years, he dedicated his time and service to the Hartford community until his retirement from the Police Department on February 1, 1992.
Retirement didn't slow Del down. He worked part-time at Hartford Savings Bank alongside his brother-in-law, Pete Schwartz. He was a longtime member of the Hartford Country Club from 1965 to 2005 with many rounds of golf enjoyed with Mary, the Men's League, and various friends. They cherished memories made going on many other trips with friends, where they golfed, enjoyed beverages and had plenty of harmless tomfoolery! After Mary's retirement from the Hartford Savings Bank, Del and Mary treasured their winter escapes to Kissimmee, Florida, where they always welcomed visits from John, JJ, and dear friends.
Del is survived by his beloved & cherished grandson, Joseph (Rachel) Schraufnagel, and great-grandchildren William, Lucy, and Henry; his sister, Rose (Ron) Vollmer; and many nieces, nephews, extended family members, and friends.
He is now reunited with his beloved wife, Mary; his son, John Schraufnagel; his parents, Edwin and Alice Schraufnagel; parents-in-law, Peter and Regina Schwartz; sisters-in-law, Eileen, Evelyn, and Rita; and brothers-in-law, Donald and Peter (Peg) Schwartz.
A Memorial Mass for Del will be celebrated on Tuesday, July 15, 2025, at 6:30 p.m. at St. Kilian Catholic Church (264 W. State Street, Hartford, WI 53027), with Fr. Andrew Linn officiating. Family will greet relatives and friends at the church from 4:00 p.m. until the time of Mass.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions to St. Kilian Catholic Church or the Hartford Police Department are appreciated.
Many heartfelt thanks to Del's care team over the past five years – we couldn't have kept his smiles, stories, love for sports, and his amazing memory and wit going strong without you all! God bless you!
Thanks also to Lily Hospice for your wonderful care and guidance when needed most.
