With deepest condolences to Amilcar Sr., the children, and their entire family as my dear sister journeys to a seat among the ancestors. I am very sad that she will join them, but will listen for her voice in the whirlwind and feel her spirit in the ongoing storms for change.

I first met Dr. Demetria "Dee" Shabazz when she enrolled in my Contemporary African American literature class at the University of Houston in the early 1990s. She was smart, intellectual and politically committed. She was one of my most memorable students, and I am deeply saddened to hear about her passing.

Demetria and I were in choir together at Ball High School in Galveston. We were officers of the choir (she was president, and I was vice president). We were also in a group called "Singers" while in the choir. I'll always remember and cherish those pure and wonderful times with her. Rest easy classmate. Until we meet again, -Henry

I was fortunate to attend middle school and high school with Demetria. She was kind, funny, and never hesitated to stand up for the underdog. Demetria loved music and always sang will all her heart and soul in her voice. The world was lucky to have her in it.

Dee was my professor in 2008, and she left a lasting impression. My sincere condolences to her family, friends, and community near and far.
