Denis Michael Crist, age 76, of
San Diego, California, passed away peacefully at home with his family by his side on March 8, 2026. He was born in
Malden, Massachusetts, on August 23, 1949, to the late Mary Young Crist. He was the loving father of two daughters, Natalie Crist and her partner Jasmine Lopez of
San Diego, California, and Colleen Crist Campbell of Derry, New Hampshire, and the proud grandfather of Joey and Kevin Campbell of Derry, New Hampshire.
Denis was raised in Everett, Massachusetts, and attended Everett High School. Upon graduating, at the age of 19, he proudly enlisted in the United States Marine Corps. He served bravely with the 1st Battalion, 9th Marine Division, "The Walking Dead," during the Vietnam War. A Purple Heart recipient, he carried the effects of his service throughout his life, meeting every challenge with resilience, perseverance, and quiet strength. Denis truly embodied the belief of "Once a Marine, Always a Marine," proudly displaying his devotion daily by wearing one of his USMC shirts in every style.
He built his life in Brant Rock, Massachusetts, rooted in hard work and devotion to his family. He worked for the United States Postal Service at Boston's General Mail Facility for over 30 years. As a night shift supervisor, he was known for his strong work ethic, sense of humor, and for always supporting his staff, especially fellow veterans. He took great pride in providing for those he loved.
After retirement, he followed the sun and moved to
San Diego, California. Denis kept strong ties to home and maintained friendships and family connections coast to coast.
Denis loved life and always lived "in the moment." For him, every moment was the best one. He loved to read, spend time outdoors by the ocean, and go camping with friends and family. He could often be found cooking something delicious on the grill for everyone, with an ice-cold beer in his hand and good conversation all around.
Denis was a man of genuine warmth and generosity who left a lasting impression on everyone he met. Whether sharing stories of his adventures-starting his own hot dog stand at Revere Beach, fishing trips, playing softball, living in New Orleans, his service to his country, or traveling around the world-no one was ever a stranger to Denis.
He always enjoyed a good poker game, whether it was a small game with friends or a high-stakes table in Las Vegas. He had a way of making moments brighter for everyone around him with his jokes, love, and simply his presence. Above all, he was a devoted, caring father and proud grandfather. He cherished time with family above all else, and his love for them was constant, deep, and unconditional.
Denis is survived by his two sisters, Sharyn Cunningham of East Longmeadow, Massachusetts, and Susan Clark and her husband Tim of Springfield, Massachusetts; many nieces and nephews; and his beloved "grandpups," Trooper and Rosie. He was preceded in death by his brother-in-law, Robert "Butchie" Cunningham, and his maternal grandparents, George Young and Edna Murphy Young.
Denis was a hero to his country and an even greater one to his family. He lived a life defined by strength, laughter, and love. He will be deeply missed and always remembered. Semper Fidelis.
A celebration of life and military honors will be announced at a later date.
