Denise Helen Hughes Ames, beloved daughter of the late Frederick R. Douglas and Willie M. Douglas, was born on February 1, 1952 in Groton Town, Virginia. She departed this life on March 22, 2025 at Manokin Manor in Princess Anne, Maryland.
Denise was educated in the public schools of Accomack County. She attended Mappsville Elementary School, North Accomack Elementary School, T. C. Walker Junior High School, and was a graduate of Mary N. Smith High School. Upon graduation, she continued her education in Silver Springs, Maryland.
In 1973, Denise gained employment at NASA as a data entry specialist and dedicated twenty-two years of ser-vice. In later years, she worked at a call center for a brief period. In April 2003, she began working at Wal-Mart as a cashier. She worked there until her retirement in March 2019. Everyone enjoyed going through her line because she always kept a conversation going.
At an early age, Denise accepted Christ as her Lord and Savior and joined First Baptist Church in Mappsville, Virginia. On July 14, 1979 she married Albert Ames.
In her leisure, Denise enjoyed spending time with her kids and grandkids. She also loved to crochet, talk on the phone, and watch The Golden Girls, The Price is Right with Bob Barker, and The Andy Griffith Show.
In addition to her parents, Denise was preceded in death by her brother, Hamilton Justice.
She leaves to cherish her loving memories her daughter, Natasha Davis (Costella); son, Michael Ames (Covera Dickerson); four grandchildren, Ty'Kirah Townsend, Jayden Dorsey, Michael Ames, Jr., and Jordon Ames; special sister/cousin, Margo Tyler; and a host of other relatives and friends.
