Denise
I stand here today with a heart that is both heavy with grief and full of love as I remember my sister, Denise. She was just 59 - far too young - but in those years she lived a life that was truly her own.
Denise had a way about her. She had tenacity - that kind of determination that could move mountains, or at least make sure things got done the right way… her way. She had spunk, too, a spark that lit up a room. And if she had something on her mind, well, you could count on her to speak it - no sugar-coating, just pure Denise.
She had such a love for animals - cats, dogs, ferrets - all creatures great and small. She cared for them the way she cared for people: deeply and without hesitation.
Denise loved her family fiercely. She had a deep love and respect for her mom and her late father, her god parents, her cousins, aunts and uncles, her many family members and friends. who helped shape the person she became. And she shared a special bond with her brother, a connection filled with loyalty and love that nothing could break. Her brother is 7ft tall and she was 4 ft 9, (affectionally referred to as the little sister) Her brother always said she had nine lives, but now she is at peace.
Denise was warm, she was humorous, and she was proud of her Jewish faith. She lived with a strength of spirit and a generosity that touched everyone who knew her.
I will miss her laugh, her honesty, and that fierce love she had for her family and friends. While today is a day of mourning, it's also a day of gratitude - gratitude that we were blessed with her presence, her humor, her heart, and her spirit.
In the words of the tradition she cherished: May her memory be for a blessing. Denise's memory will live on in all of us - in every laugh we share, every act of kindness, and every time we speak our truth without fear. That's what she taught me, and that's how I will carry her with me, always.
