Denise Gaye Swerdan

Denise Gaye Swerdan, age 59, of Roscommon, passed away on Saturday, July 5, 2025 in Houghton Lake, Michigan. Denise was born March 17, 1966, in Detroit, Michigan, the daughter of Rex and Nancy (Wood) Stevens.

With heavy hearts, we announce the unexpected passing of Denise Gaye Swerdan, a vibrant soul whose love for the outdoors, adventure, and freedom left an indelible mark on everyone who knew her.

Denise lived life with passion and purpose. Her happiest moments were spent beneath the open sky - whether gathered around a campfire under the stars, navigating a winding trail on a motorcycle, or floating peacefully in the water. Nature was her sanctuary, and she embraced every opportunity to be in it. Her camping trips weren't just getaways - they were celebrations of connection, laughter, and the simple joy of being present.

She found freedom on two wheels, the hum of a motorcycle beneath her and the wind in her hair - a symbol of the independent spirit that defined her. On the water, she found calm and clarity. Whether swimming, or just dipping her toes in the lake, Denise radiated peace whenever she was near water.

Denise's love for life was infectious. She welcomed everyone with warmth, lived boldly, and inspired others to do the same. Her courage, sense of humor, and generosity will never be forgotten.

She leaves behind children, grandchildren, and family, who will forever miss her energy, her laughter, and her stories around the fire. In her memory, may we each take a moment to breathe in fresh air, chase the open road, and find stillness by the water - just as she would have wanted.

Denise is survived by her children: Dawn Stevens of Grand Rapids, MI, her two sons, Steven (Danielle Ritchie) Halas of Houghton Lake, MI and Brian (Jessica Gildersleeve) Halas of Lake City, MI; her 10 beloved grandchildren; brother, Dennis (Maria) Stevens of Novi, MI; and sisters, Cheryl (Stephen Fockler) Stevens of Lake City, MI, Kimberly Uhlyarik (Stevens) of Florida; and many nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.

Denise is preceded in death by her parents, Rex and Nancy (Wood) Stevens; brother, Mark Stevens; and sister-in-law, (Big) Aunt Denise Stevens.

Denise's celebration of life will be held at the Missaukee County Park, August 3rd, 2025, from 11:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Donations to the family for funeral cost will be accepted by the family at the celebration of life.
