Dennis E. Gosier died of natural causes on Friday, January 16, 2026, at his home in
Lady Lake, Florida, where he had lived for the better part of the past decade. He was a beloved father of five and grandfather of 10, wise and generous, hardworking and stalwart, always devoted to serving his family. Born on March 31, 1939, Dennis grew up on a farm in
Hammond, New York, earned his bachelor's degree in history from LeMoyne College in Syracuse, New York, served a brief tour in the U.S. Army, and earned a master's degree in International Relations from the University of Pennsylvania. He settled in the Washington, D.C., area in advance of his marriage to Roberta J. Gosier in 1966. They raised their family in northwest Washington and in Silver Spring, Maryland. He worked as a researcher at the American University in Washington, D.C., before going to work as an analyst at the U.S. Census Bureau in Suitland, Maryland, where he spent the bulk of his career. During his time at the bureau he was active with the American Federation of Government Employees, helping members bring cases of workplace harassment and discrimination under the federal government's equal employment opportunity laws. Dennis was deeply proud of this work; he had a keen sense of justice. A robust work ethic propelled him through life-for decades he delivered newspapers as a second job, rising in the early hours every day to distribute hundreds of copies of The Washington Post throughout the Silver Spring area before driving to his job at the U. S. Census Bureau. He took to physical labor with determination and vigor, whether delivering papers or taking out the trash or clearing rocks from the road when Roberta's love for country drives took the family a little too far off the beaten path. Dennis delighted in his family and in his pastimes. He loved opera, history, politics, and knowledge in general. A hi-fi aficionado, he never stopped tweaking and upgrading the sprawling stereo system that shared space with shelves full of thick books in his den. He was often laconic and reserved, except when he was giddy with a new joke that he wanted to share, often calling on the phone for just that purpose. He was a believer in good nutrition and daily vitamin supplements but also the occasional pint of Ben & Jerry's. Dennis always showed his love for his family through patient listening, wise words, and thoughtful deeds. In retirement he traveled, explored his family history, and enjoyed the company of family and friends. Dennis was predeceased by his wife Roberta J. Gosier; and their daughter Denise Eleanor Gosier. He is survived by their children Christopher Gosier, Phillip Gosier, Kenneth Gosier, and Amanda DesBarres; his sister Marlene Webster.
