Obituary for Dennis Nelson
Dennis Nelson, a devoted father, grandfather, and servant to his community, passed away peacefully at his home in Murray, Utah, on March 23, 2025, at the age of 76.
Born on September 28, 1948, in Baldwin Park, California, Dennis spent his early years in Montana, attending Missoula High School, where he played football. He later pursued higher education at Brigham Young University before pursuing a career in law enforcement.
As a police officer with the Salt Lake City Police Department, Dennis served with unwavering courage and dedication. His bravery was recognized when he was awarded the Medal of Valor after a fatal shootout in which he was gravely wounded. Despite being shot twice and nearly losing his life, he managed to neutralize the assailant-an individual wanted by the FBI for the murder of another officer in California. Tragically, Dennis also lost his partner in the exchange, a loss he carried with him for the rest of his life.
Dennis, a lifelong member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, found great joy and purpose in his faith. He served an honorable two-and-a-half-year mission in the California North Mission, dedicating himself to sharing the gospel. His faith remained the cornerstone of his life, guiding his love for his children.
Dennis had a deep appreciation for the simple joys of life. He was a voracious reader, particularly fond of works by Louis L'Amour, Tom Clancy, John Grisham, and gospel-related books. He loved camping, football, and movies-especially the cherished memories of taking his children to drive-in theaters when they were young. Road trips with family were a favorite pastime, as were the moments spent teaching his children valuable life skills, from driving to shooting and bike riding. Above all, Dennis will be remembered for his love of the gospel, his love of his children and grandchildren, and the warmth of his laughter and humor.
Dennis is survived by his children, Zachary Den (Stephany) Nelson, Jessica (José) Valentín, Sariah (Victor) Correa, and Alysha Romero; his beloved grandchildren, Izaak Elijah, Izaiah Rex, Maximo Luke, and Mykaela Jessa (Nelson); Adriana Nicole, Mayah Marie, and Olivia Grace (Valentín); Maiya Analise and Angello Roman (Correa); and his siblings, Margaret Simonson, Betty (Wilkie) Curtis, Gayle (Mel) Snook, and James Nelson.
His family finds solace in knowing that his spirit endures in the lives he touched. In honor of Dennis and in lieu of flowers, donations may be made to TreeUtah or the Salt Lake City Police Foundation.
Dennis Nelson's life was one of service, strength, and love. He will be profoundly missed but never forgotten.
