Lieutenant Commander (US Navy, Retired) Dennis Alexander Slocumb, Jr.
LTC Dennis Alexander Slocumb, Jr., US Navy Retired, died peacefully at Vitas Hospice Care in Panama City January 13, 2025 surrounded by his loving family. Dennis was born October 25, 1942 in Phenix City, AL. He was a graduate of Central High, and Auburn University.
Dennis is preceded in death by his parents, Dennis Slocumb, Sr. and Margaret Prickett Slocumb, and his first wife, Billie J. Davis Slocumb. Survivors include his loving wife, Mary Ann Slocumb; daughter, Billie Denise Slocumb; son, Dennis Alexander "Al" Slocumb, III (Sonja); brother, Robert E. Slocumb (Peggy); his grandchildren, Christina, Jessica and Richard (Aarika) Link; Dennis Alexander "Alex" Slocomb, IV, and Heather (Dylan) Aringdale; his great-grandchildren, Alena and Alexis Arroyo, Chase Blanchard, Braden and Bryce Link and Zoe and Max Aringdale. Also surviving are 16 first cousins and a large extended family.
Dennis joined the Naval Reserve during his junior year of high school, and this service became a lifelong achievement. He served in the US Navy for 20 years before joining Unisys, Sperry Rand, and finally SAIC, then retiring in Panama City Beach, FL. Dennis was proud of his military career rising from the rank of Seaman to LCDR. His Naval career took him from Phenix City, AL to New London, CT. From New London, he was assigned to the U. S. Naval Guided Missile School in Virginia Beach, VA. After successful completion, he was stationed at Charleston, SC, serving in the submarine force. Due to his outstanding performance as an enlisted serviceman, he was selected to attend Auburn University under the Naval College Program which he completed in 1972. After completion, he assumed the rank of Ensign, and was stationed in San Diego, CA. He was deployed on West Pac in 1972 where he became a Shellback. Dennis was also stationed in Chicago, IL and Sturgeon Bay, WI where he was the Executive Officer. Dennis was then stationed at Skaggs Island, CA where he served as cryptologist. His last duty station was at the Pentagon. After retirement, Dennis enjoyed boating, camping riding his Harley, and singing karaoke. He was a member of the Fleet Reserve Association # 346 and AmVets Post # 47.
A Celebration of Life service will be held at 11:00 AM Monday, January 27, 2025, at the Kent-Forest Lawn Funeral Home Chapel with Chaplain Senter of Vitas Hospice officiating, and military honors offered by the US Navy Honor Guard. The family will receive friends at the chapel from 10:00 AM until service time at 11:00 AM.
