Dennis was born on July 18, 1952, in Newark, NJ and was the son of the late Daniel Webster and Beauty Mae (Peacock) Webster. He graduated from East Side High School in Newark, NJ, where he wrestled and played football. Dennis started his college career at Seton Hall University, earning his Bachelor's degree; after which he continued his graduate and doctoral studies in the University of Maryland, College Park's Psychology program, obtaining his MS ('77) and Ph.D. ('82).
After completing his educational pursuits Dennis remained in Maryland. He began his professional career at George Mason University in Fairfax, VA; where he would spend the entirety of his professional career. He served the institution in several positions throughout the years. One of his early roles was Assistant Director of the counseling center, where he spearheaded the creation of the Black Peer Counseling Program. The program provided a specific avenue for people of color to seek, and provide, mentorship, advocacy, and a sense of community. He made further impacts at GMU as the Director of the Multicultural Resource and Research Center. A role in which he worked to build bridges across cultural divides so often found in campus environments. He advocated for his students, working tirelessly to enrich their perspectives and lives. Dennis' patient and caring nature made an immense difference in the lives of many students and colleagues during his tenure at George Mason; He retired as the Associate Dean of University Life in 2017.
In life, Dennis' unwavering belief in humanity's potential was reflected in the way he treated others with compassion, dignity, and deep respect. He did not take his role as a humanitarian lightly in all aspects of his life, his generosity was constant to acquaintances, friends, and family.
It was once said, "home is where one starts from"; in his home Dennis loved his wife dearly and held his children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren close to his heart. When he spoke about his family, his pride was unmistakable. You could feel it in his voice, hear it in his words, and see it in his eyes. Family gatherings were never complete without Dennis dancing joyfully at the center, showing off his signature shoulder moves. He would bring light to any family celebration, often leading karaoke sessions where his amazing voice took center stage. His favorite songs to sing ranged from classic Motown and heartfelt country ballads to the timeless melodies of Nat King Cole.
Curious by nature, Dennis had an insatiable thirst for knowledge. He loved to research and learn about people, history, current events, and the world around him. His conversations were often vibrant and insightful, especially when discussing politics or the latest news. He never shied away from a good debate, always bringing thoughtfulness and heart to the table.
A lover of stories, Dennis enjoyed spending quiet time watching detective shows like Law and Order, Matlock, and Monk, as well as classic cowboy westerns that reminded him of a bygone era.
He was also known to have a great sense of humor and was naturally funny. Often cracking unexpected jokes that would catch you off guard. Dennis was a joyous, eclectic soul who made it his mission to celebrate life's bright moments and to walk beside those he loved through life's challenges. He was a steady, comforting presence who always showed up, especially when it mattered most. His legacy is one of love, laughter, curiosity, and compassion.
